I just bough a new old stock Sankyo 500 and there is a loud static noise when a movie is playing and when nothing is playing. How do I get rid of this?

I was able to hear sound though the earphone jack but there was no sound when I connect my earphones to the line out jack. Why?

Here is a sample of the noise captured through earphones out.

I was able to get rid of some but not all of the noise using Audacity software.

Greetings, Robert!

-welcome to the 8mm Forum!

The static pop when the film is playing is usually because some insulator is rubbing on another and the charge builds up until the insulation can't hold it off and you get an arc to ground.

Personally I think it's the result of the reel flanges rubbing on the film edges. Anybody who wants to dispute me on this may be entirely right: it's just a theory...maybe a guess.

It's something that seems that much worse in the winter months when the air is dry and provides less of a bleed path for static charges.

Pops without film mean something internal (Capacitor?) is breaking down and is nearing retirement.

The line-out jack is only a signal meant to input to an external amp and isn't good for powering anything.

Recently I calculated that it would take the maximum power available from line out several weeks to boil a cup of water.

From this we learn two things:

1) This is a really wimpy signal.

2) Obviously I have too much time on my hands.

Probably a bad amplifier

If getting this ONLY when connected to a stereo amplifier then check the cables you are using between projector and stereo amplifier

I have to do an experiment here.

My ST-1200HD and this one cartoon I have just don't get along. It's all sorts of pops in the soundtrack with this combination, so they are permanently separated.

-but after I divorced them, I got an aluminum Elmo reel for the ST-1200. If it really was the plastic reel grinding on the film this should solve the problem.

-peace at last!
