I am hoping someone can assist who knows exactly how to reach the diffuser in this model. This is the item that swings into place when the machine is idle or on "still" - to protect the film from burning. This stays engaged and never moves to the right place when I switch to play (forward or reverse).

This is the 2nd issue I have had - the first one I unfortunately mangled trying to tear it out. Now I purchased the exact same model from Ebay and have the exact same issue. I did not realize this was common in bell & howell machines.

Can anyone out there advise how to reach this diffuser? I cannot reach it through the back, and it is between the film gate and lamp housing. I have all the necessary screw drivers, but simply can't reach this. Any ideas would - replies be very helpful.

This forum gives access to manuals. In the 8mm projector section you can download a manual for the Bell& Howell 456 range.
You may find what you need under "Safety Shutter Adjustment".
