I guess its a no-brainer that all the wild flickering problems I'm having with my newly acquired Ampro are due to my film gate and pressure plate being in 2 pieces, when they should be one?

this what I have:

this is what i think it should be:

the arrow is pointing to the missing brad/rivets I think

(and another at the top)

Right or wrong?

You are partially correct. However, you are missing one other piece, plus, two springs, and four screws.

The missing piece is fitted to the large piece by using the two vertical tapped holes on the right (near the little "handle" used to remove and refit the gate assembly.)

The piece (which you have) with the slot where the claw goes in and out fits onto two vertical screw holes on the left, as you surmise.

Between the middle plate and the latter piece there are two springs to give tension on the film as it moves though the gate.

Thanks Maurice. I should have posted (or will later if it'll help) a side view of the left piece, the pressure plate. It is actually comprised of two pieces with the springs in between as you describe. Could this be the "missing" piece you are referring to? If so, then the hole where the arrow should have the connector (bolt/nut/rivet, whatever) that would connect the handle plate to the pressure plate assembly consisting of the clawhole plate, springs, and pressure plate, which I think I have there (just hard to see). If so, then I'm missing only the nut/bolts at the arrow and the other hole at the other end at the top, yes? Do you have one of these projectors that you might photograph the whole assembly as it should be?

So sorry. I should have looked longer at your photos. I was wrong with my comments.
It appears that you now only need two screws to hold the two pieces together. The screw heads will face us and go into the tapped holes in the large plate. The hole/s marked with a red arrow.

I'm a bit confused. I am not familiar with an 8mm Ampro Stylist. They did make a 16mm Stylist and later a Super Stylist.

Just noticed there are screws on the back also.

Clarification...Those screws do not go through the back plate. They are visible because there are holes in the back plate that expose them.

Yes my apologies for inserting this into the 8mm forum. And Barry, those pics are great--thanks so much. Now the next question...where in the world can I find screws like that?! I've only newly discovered how fun this can be, so I don't have a supply of parts machines to scavenge from. Guess I'll visit the buy/sell/trade/wanted forum and hope to get lucky. Thanks again, Barry. As an afterthought, I'm wondering how those came loose and lost in the first place...

Perhaps a local hardware store could identify the screw threads and might have something suitable.

Ace hardware stores carry every screw under the sun. Take those plates with you and I am sure they will help you find the screws you need.

Aight well the "Ace" hardware in Noonday, TX (POP 515) was Ace and then they were just Noonday hardware--no luck...smallest was size 4 and then it occurred to me, silly, to check http://www.acofs.org.au/part_5_files/AMPRO/Tech%20Stylist.PDF

I am not too sure that you are correct.
As I read the disassembly instructions, the first two screws to be removed are designated as part number 1230.
These are described as "Screw, Special. Fil. Hd.". (Pressure shoe retaining screws with a fillister head.)
If this is the case, it's bad news that they are special.
I think that the screws which you have marked are the two, which, with their springs, secure the gate plate.
Of course, I could be wrong.

ahhh...yes well I see your point. I can get the two circled screws for $5.50 and hope for the best. Only thing I can hope is, there's just no need for them to make some custom shape/thread/head since all they're doing is connecting the two pieces of metal, and there's a lot of clearance around the head of the screw during operation. But you're right, won't get my hopes up on this. If the thread is the "special' part of it I would just wonder why go to the trouble?

Good news: Turns out those "Special" screws, Maurice, are the ones that hold and guide the springs. Their specialness is in the very thick shank which helps guide the springs. If it wasn't for my boneheadedness by ordering 5/32 length instead of 5/64 as the parts list called for, I'd be projecting now. But the thread is correct. (boltdepot.com seems excellent and cheap, 10 of these for $5.50 including shipping)
