Is that a digest, or full length?

Hi,

the UFA release is identically with the Ken version. Also prints from USA with german sound. I have also the three parter. Same good colors. Never have had a red tint print.

The 400 footer which was distributed in Germany by marketing-film shows scenes not included in the three parter.

I agree, great colour, but then my 400ft. version has great color as well. I wonder if this is the full 3X400ft. version?

I've also noted that the 1X400ft. scope version has colour that has held up very well, while the 3X400ft. scope version has tended to fade. Different labs for different digest versions, I suppose.

Hello all,

Regarding the Marketing 400 foot
version, is this on different film
stock which would cause a shift in
color or focus if both versions were spliced
together? Also how much more
is available in the German 400' that is
not in the Ken 400 foot?

Also does the scope 400 foot have the
complete chariot sequence or only part of it?

Micheal, the scope 400ft. (1X400) is the same cut as the flat 1X400ft. version. It's an awesome edit, but it does not have the complete chariot race. It ends right after the chariot race and Ben Hur being crowned, fade out.

The 3X400ft. version (scope/flat) has a more complete chariot race sequence, but not by much.

Please note: I am speaking of the American 3X400ft. version and not the German print.

Once again, the colours are quite striking in that frame shot, not a scratch to be seen. Wish i could read german.

Osi, Michael,

there existing no german prints.
The UFA and the marketing prints are indentically to
the english sound prints from KEN. They made deals with KEN.
All these prints are from the same lab in the USA.
The US-lab only changed the sound master for the
sound recording.
Prints like Ben Hur have nice american voice during
the leader who speaks in english:
"This is Ben Hur part 2 - german"
for example.
They were also delivered on blue american reels.

German prints never came on blue reels. They used Posso
(marketing) or other typical black german reels.

The Derann print of BEN HUR, while not perfect, has very good color, with accurate flesh tones, and vivid red on the Roman soldiers' uniforms. I just screened one of the reels this afternoon(there are EIGHT 600 foot reels!!!).

Watching this film in scope and stereo only enhances the enjoyment. And, of course, having the complete film means you miss nothing of its splendor and excitement.

Frank,

It seems that with some
imperfections, this Derann feature
has good color and definition which
regardless of some exposure timing/grading
the story and color overcome the neg and print marks?

I always found the nativity scene,cave scenes and
night scenes in the rain to be very
dramatic. Especially when the rain runs
down from the foot of the cross.

Are these scenes exposed well in the feature,
or are they very dark to notice the detail?

Michael,

The sheer drama of this excellent film outweighs any flaws in the print, including those I spoke about in another post.

I have enjoyed this, my favorite film, for nearly 50 years, and I still feel the emotions watching it now.

The darker scenes, including the discovery of the 'lepers' in the prison, are definitely viewable, and I project it onto a 10 foot wide screen. The darkest is the cave scene, but, obviously, the smaller the image, the brighter it will be.

I am waiting for reel one to be returned from Derann. It had a sych problem, which they are correcting. They have been extremely understanding, and prove how great they are to deal with.

I just ordered their 'CREATURE' in 3D. Always loved the idea of depth in film watching, and hope more and more films will use this technology. Recently, we were in Disneyworld, and saw 'MICKEY'S PHILHARMAGIC". The 3D was OUTSTANDING.
