how come 16mm reels were not designed like 8mm reels that allow you to slide the film in the side slot when rewinding instead of trying to fit the end of the film into the slot? and on some 2000ft reels the the slot is recessed making it harder. [Mad]

There are such reels, but remember 16mm came first and was a scale down of 35mm. Autocatch and slots came much later (about the time of the self-threads). The "Eikimatic" reel doesn't require you to do anything but lay the film on the reel and turn it and there were others like it.
