Back in the late 40's and early 50's I was the school projectionist (weren't we all?) running a single B&H 601 machine for all film occasions. A few years back I managed to acquire a 601 for a song, but it was not the grey crackle finish of my old machine; I had to be content with brown.
I've just acquired a B&H rewind set... two model 612 2000ft geared arms (which are in beautiful condition, almost as new) coupled to a model 504 diagonal splicer, which is absolutely pristine... it looks to be unused. And they are brown to match my 601! I now feel like I'm back in school except that I do not recall using a diagonal splicer; I'm pretty sure the school one was a conventional one.
Has anyone out there got an instruction leaflet for the 504 Diagonal splicer? I probably won't use it in normal use, but for the sheer hell of it I'd like to try it!

Martin,
All of our numbers were different. The 8/16 diagonal splicer is Model 136 and dates back to the 1930. It made very strong and very visible splices. On 8mm it's right across one frame. Here's the title page, if this is your model I'll work on scanning the rest of the instruction sheet and send them off to you.

In 35mm a diagonal splicer is used for sound.

John, That's the one...the full scan would be appreciated. That's the marvel of this Forum, it's full of mutually helpful people! The originating date is very interesting; this set carries no date and is fully integrated as a "rewind bench" with the two geared rewinds linked to the splicer with steel bars (two each side). The base of the rewinds can be bolted down by using bolts up into the underside of the base. The original cement bottle shown in your picture is still in place!!
The rewinds and splicer are both labelled as UK made, but I suspect that the components are US sourced. The difference in Model no's (which is well known with projectors) is probably to satisfy our strange "Made in UK" labelling laws!.

Hi Martin,

I'll try and get that scanned in the next couple of days and off to you. It's had to post multiple pages on the forum so it'll be to your email.

It's interesting that the metal rods that hold the rewinds to the splicer also worked on the B&H 8/16 hot splicer which in the B&H version also had the small cement bottle holder in front!

As Larry said, diagonal splicers were used for sound in 35mm, and later when tape splicers came in, 35mm and 16mm diag. splicers were used by sound editors.
