Someone told me today that they believe the American assembled TQ3's (black models) don't suffer from the cracking of the worm gear and that it was a problem specific to Uk assembled machines. Does anyone know if this is true?

terry, think all the charcoal tq3 were made in japan, all suffered the same worm failure, the very early tq1 seem to have upheld well

Hi Terry, The UK assembled 16mm Bell Howell projectors were produced from 1947 until 1963 approximately with the models running from 601 to 644. Even the 1960s 641 to 644 series rarely seem to have worm gear cracking. The problem seems to have started seriously with the later 8D, 652, 655 and TQ models, mostly made in Japan from 1964 onwards. Chicago made models such as the 535, 545 and 568 seem less prone to trouble. I don't know why.
