O.K. forum brothers, you are my last resort.....

I'm trying to identify an old cartoon that used to come on T.V. back in the 70's. It was shown on one of the variety cartoon shows, like "Porky & Friends", or Popeye, etc., where usually a variety of different cartoons were shown.

In this particular cartoon, there was a statue of a Pan (boy with animal hind legs, and horns). He is holding a flute or something to his mouth. The statue is part of a fountain. At some point, there is a deer in the forest who is being chased by dogs and hunters. The Pan statue comes to life and saves the deer. He then runs back to the fountain and freezes back into a statue.

The animation reminded me of the classic Disney era, so probably from the 40's. I remember some classical music was used in the cartoon also.

I hope someone out there may remember this cartoon and can help me with the title. Thanks for reading!

James.

James, I REALLY wish I could give you some info, but my area of study is classic era studio cartoons, now, ask a question about that and I can probably help you.

It sounds like the first movement of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony from Fantasia other than the hunters and the dogs. There is a Pan figure that keeps teasing a Pegasus and every time the Pegasus turns to see what happens Pan pretends to be a statue. (Derann, 200 ft, Code "E")

James, are you sure you aren't blending this one with Bambi?

It does remind me of a VERY short lived series of cartoons that Walter Lantz put out with a "Fawn' character. I remember that the backgrounds were quite striking.

TALE OF THE VIENNA WOODS:

This is available on laserdisc in the HAPPY HARMONIES collections. Sounded familiar and grabbed my laserdisc and it was the first selection. Shot in 2 strip Technicolor. There is a scene similar to BAMBI. Made in 1934.

I quote from Leonard Maltin's "Of Mice And Magic" :-

The Harman -Ising series was an immediate success, one exhibitor wrote to Motion Picture Herald, "Oh, how happy are we to be able to offer our patrons Metro's HAPPY HARMONIES cartoons, thus enabling us to rid our theater of the atmosphere created, in the last two years, by Willie Whopper and Flip the Frog."

I have all the Willie Whopper's on 16mm and a large number of the Flip's, and I know what I would choose to screen any evening.

Hugh Harman and Rudy Ising only hit the jackpot when they made "Puss Gets The Boot" in 1940, and only then were their cat and mouse team successful when William Hanna and Joseph Barbera were allowed to continue to produce the world's best loved cartoon films.

Larry- Thank you so MUCH! That's exactly the cartoon I was looking for. It used to come on T.V. all the time when I was a kid, but hasnt been aired for decades. It was great to see it again on You-Tube.

Also thanks to everyone for helping [Smile] .

Osi- I'm surprised this one isn't considered a "classic era studio cartoon"?? How far back are you talking?

James.
