This morning I went to a video conference.

We were sitting around a conference table watching two monitors: One showing us and another showing the conference table and attendees on the other end (In Russia).

Amid all the technical discussion I formed a strong impression:

"Good LORD, I've gotten FAT!"

-because there I was, looking for all the world like I'd just had Thanksgiving dinner..and eaten everybody else's too! I griped to myself how unfair it was: I try to watch what I eat and I get pretty regular exercise. How did it come to this...and so quickly?!

Then I decided to check something out. There was a drawing on the wall behind me. It is of a circular structure..yet on screen it was a horizontally oriented OVAL!

Then I noticed that the monitor the Russians were on was 4x3, but ours what 16x9. I didn't gain weight (at least not since yesterday...), I had become stretched!

So you see, messing around with films and projectors for a while can actually provide some useful knowledge...if nothing else it saved me from living on lettuce for a couple of weeks!

Steve,

You mean you were fooled by by the Russian ratio aspect. My camcorder has an elongation option which makes everyone look thinner and taller. I've been tempted to use it. [Wink]

I was running single-manning multiplex which had auto shutdown & buzzer warning for projectionist change to 'scope.
One day the projection box 'phone rings: "Usherette here in screen 3, the picture looks funny."
Me: "Funny? How?"
Usherette: "All the people are thin!"
You've guessed. The auto-shutdown and warning buzzer hadn't worked. With an audience of about 100 nobody had complained and we were about five minutes into the 'scope feature, with incorrect backing lens, no anamorphic, and no sceen masking change.
Perhaps the audience thought that was how we were presenting the film.

So did you stop the show or just let it slide?

Most people don't have an eye for this stuff, but people like us would be out to the management griping it.

Maybe a few more pounds wouldn't be a bad idea...Sometime next winter I'll probably be appearing on the other screen...literally in Siberia.

-a little insulation could be a good thing.

1) Continue with sound
2) Close dowser
3) Change masking plate
4) Swing lens turret
5) Push screen masking buttons
6) Open dowser
All done in ten seconds.

I purchased my mother a new TV - flat screen high def

Of course it is a 16x9 aspect ratio since that is the only kind they make.

Standard definition ( like DVDs ) look hideous - noisy, grainy, bad color and contrast no matter the settings.

High definition looked fine - except for the 1/2 second lag between the picture and the audio ( a common problem with all sets )

- AND the Squishies are evident on any material that is not 16x9 aspect ratio -

I ended up taking it back for a refund. Purchased 4 used 30" Sony Trinitron sets for about $45 each ( all in fine shape ) - saved over $500 and the picture looks great with no lag on the audio.

Roy, Without doubt you did the right thing; it took 70 years to develop a REAL TV system.... commercial GREED and the SHEEP mentality have done their level best to destroy it in 5.

Long live the INTELLIGENTSIA of this world!!

We have a perfectly good 30 inch Sony Trinitron that was actually given to us because friends of ours went HD.

Now, I've seen their new set and it actually looks really good (particularly with blu-ray and HD broadcast), but I know for a fact this family has money problems and didn't exactly open up their wallet and start counting out hundred dollar bills.

We appreciate the set (all 160 pounds of it...), but I don't think I'd enjoy the improvement as much if it was sloshing around on my credit card balance for a couple of years.

The disposability of stuff like this is amazing these days...
