Hi David, I have a couple of big black Debries and have a similar problem. With mine it is an amplifier problem and needs to be sorted by someone with a knowledge of valve amps, not so easy to find these days. Sometimes its the valves, often it is the P.E.C.
It can also be the blackening of the bottom of the lamp as the projection lamp is used also as an exciter lamp. It can also be oil on the lens tube. Presumably, you have checked these and also that the scanning of the sound track is aligned correctly. Hope I am not teaching Grandma to suck eggs ! The Cinetechnic Debrie was always my favourite 16mm projector. Both mine have the standard "gate" not the edge sprung type or velvet lined and have never given any trouble. They will cope with warped film without problems due to the large sprockets and the triple claw. I also like the unit construction design and the quiet running. No blimp required! I only wish I had the time and knowledge of amplifiers to get them going again. Both amps probably need a lot of work on them by now. I have been told that these amps are sought after by Hi Fi enthusiasts because of the quality of the sound they produce!! Ken Finch.
