I appreciate that the unusual and experimental films of Andy Warhol won't be to everyone's taste, but I feel privileged to soon be projecting three of them on 16mm at the David Lean Cinema in Croydon. All are free to attend but advance booking is requested via http://warholcroydon.co.uk/
These prints are being sent from New York: 'Chelsea Girls' (Friday 22 September at 6.30pm); 'Lonesome Cowboys' (Saturday 23 at 5.30pm); and 'Vinyl' (Monday 25 at 7.30pm). All are 18 certificate. 'Chelsea Girls' – which runs for 210 minutes and involves simultaneous use of two 16mm projectors to create a split screen effect – made history in 1966 by becoming the first ‘underground’ film to be shown in a mainstream cinema. Every 16mm screening of this is unique as the projectionist is not expected to try and ensure the two projectors are precisely in sync, and it's perfectly OK to show leaders and tails! Each projector screens six 33 minute reels. There's one soundtrack.
The screenings are part of Warhol Croydon; a major event also featuring RISEgallery exhibits, talks and guided walks until the end of September - see the website for details.
