Another starting topic for the weekend, What is the rarest print you have ever come across or have on Super 8/8mm feature or short. A Hard Days Night, Jailhouse Rock comes to mind.

Also Dad's Army BBC TV Episodes from the early 70s on 8mm i have been told these have been known to turn up.

The rarest S8 print in my collection is 'The Magic Box', the 1951 Festival of Britain film biography of cinema pioneer William Friese-Greene.

I don't know how many were manufactured of "Freaks" on Super 8, but i have it, as well as "Vampyr" (1931) on standard 8mm.

I think when it comes to rarity, it wouldn't be necessarily how many prints were manufactured, but how many prints still exist.

In the case of "Vampyr" I saw a few prints years ago, but except for this print, (which I bought off ebay three years ago)
I haven't seen another print, so, while there may have been a few prints made, there may be even fewer prints to exist now.

few years ago, I found in a movie shop many S8 full lenght features. They was many reversal prints (Diamonds are forever, few Disneys etc. There was also a german dubbed print of a italian C-Movie. The title was Insel Lesbos (Island Lesbos), it was a cinemascope print in great condition. But the movie was the worsest movie I ever watched. It was a movie like a low budget adult movie but without nudity. I don´t thing they are more than this one print around. I don´t bought it after screening and I never saw this print again. They are also no info about this movie in the IMDB database (I don´t found anything).

Osi I partly agree with you about the number of prints that exist. The problem with rare prints (particularly on LPP) is that people tend to hang on to them. Ive never seen wallace and gromit on the sales lists but if I did it would probably be double price, more than I can afford for a 600 footer. I think there were less than 20 prints made of Close Encounters but if these changed hands a lot then the rareity is less because these would appear on Ebay and the buyer of it would sell it on within a year to another buyer but this dosent happen.

I dont think I have any really rare films in my collection.

Paul, how many prints were made of the Magic Box. Why is this rare?

There was a Wallace and Gromit on E-bay twice in the past few weeks. It was there with a reserve which it never reached and the high bid got a hair over $100 US.

When I first saw this, I thought the bidding was going to go through the roof, yet it was pretty lukewarm.

"Hard Days Night" I have a copy of and was tough to find. I thought I saw a full length print of "Help" once many years ago but can't remember if it was a preview perhaps. The price on it was high. "Great Gazoo" Flintstones episode have not seen except once in 400ft edition. "The Producers" we have released by Thunderbird I think. Only fair quality but rare I would say. The most rare for us is a Spanish feature letterbox print of "Jaws" we remixed in Stereo for an ebay buyer and I think a member of this forum. Had never seen it before. I think he paid a good sum for it no doubt but I must say the quality of the image was very good and other than the Spanish track, I would also buy a copy if I could find one.

Never did see the print quality of this one as it was so short lived on 8mm, but I understand most prints went to the USA that were struck so anyone looking would do better hunting overseas me thinks. Did bid on it myself actually but as you say the seller seems to think it is the most valuable film on 8. Suppose this rather depends if you collect 8mm to have “the rarest films” or if you collect to enjoy the film the crew & cast made for us.

For me, and this is just a personal choice, the rarest film in my collection is Off the Dole which stars George Formby as a very young and newly married to his wife/co-star. The film is vintage and is often quoted as corny which perhaps it is, but I like it and have had this fairly early B&W feature from Derann for many years.
Each to his own as they say and yes I am a Formby nut !

I feel that way about "When's Your Birthday" (1937, Joe E. Brown feature). It's not his absolute best, but certianly not the bottom of the barrel either (I did a review for it on this forum), but it's a fun film and, quite frankly, the only print I'VE ever seen of this title. Extremely sharp print though.

The rarest print I have(and I say that, because I've never seen one advertised anywhere, on any dealers lists etc.) is "Battle Hell" aka "The Yangstze Incident". I did a review of this for the forum and have been trying to find out who released it on Super 8, without much joy. Can anyone help please? [Confused]

The two rarest prints I have are:
-"Fathom" with raquel welch and Anthony Franciosa
-"campbell's kingdom" with Stanley BAKER and Dirk BOGARDE
this two feature are on 2x800ft at 18fps with french sound in b&w
I bought them together on ebay in belgium one years ago for a low price.
I don't know if these films are really rare (because I am a new collector)? but I've never seen them after.

About "Fathom" I am not really sure if this rare or not but I posted this film sometimes ago and I was outbid on Ebay because here becuase it was sold for EUR 17.64.

That's the auction I won!... sorry. So it was not 1 years ago but 6 month ago (no notion of time!). The second film was campbell's kingdom, imdb list it ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050225/ ). these film are in b&w (so no faded color!) with a quite good contrast. I'm really not disappointed of this auction.

Seriously, though, that's why amateur 8mm footage occasionally sells for more than any feature on eBay, if the material is interesting enough. I assume the winning bidders are usually media companies who wish to include previously unseen footage in documentaries, or sell it to broadcasters.

Was that the film with Richard Todd in?
If so I here is a little story for you. I literally bumped into him at Pinewood Studios when I was working on Bugsy Malone. He was such a nice man and I was about 13 then and rather shy.
One of the real gentlemen actors to be sure.

Know nothing about the 8mm film though.

Another point I hadn't thought of are those fabled "test prints", one that comes to mind is "Forbidden Planet" in scope, and I believe one of my "holy grail" prints, "Duck Soup", is supposed to be a test print as well.

Yeah, I have an old Market films catalogue that came with the Star Trek trailer from them, and they list "Ten Commandments" as a feature. I would be curious as to the colour.

Derann tried to release Pixar's "Gerry's Game" a few years back and only struck a few test prints before the negative was destroyed.

That's one I'd love to have!
