Just bought a Universal 8 200' from eBay which the seller described as "New and sealed". Indeed, the picture does appear to show some shrink wrap around the box.
Were new Universal 8 films sealed in their boxes, or has this been done at a later date to encourage a sale?

That sometimes happens Maurice, (re-wrapping) to make it seem "new". Usually, original shrink wrap, after these 30 years, will show some wear, perhaps a little yellowing, in fact.

Does it show this?

Maurice,

Of course, I can't vouch for the specific film you bought, but I have seen some Castle cutdowns in a market in London which were sealed. They didn't appear to have been sealed recently.

Sorry, friends, to repeat myself, do you know if the original boxes would have been wrapped in cellophane by Universal?

Maurice,

I'm saying that it's possible as it seems that some Castle boxes were.

The ones I ordered from them were.

Yes they were origionally, Derann often had odd new sealed ones on thier lists. I used to buy the odd ones for test loops from here and there, or short runs as better to have the soundtrack on when running them to see exactly where any marks, if any, are getting. Not so good with silent.

All the new sealed ones I had all seemed to be wrapped in the same fashion and material.

Best Mark.

Yes Maurice,I have had a few Universal 8s which were sealed and did not even have their labels stuck on. They were still inside their boxes. I also remember getting The Sting at a Derann Open Day in the 90s and that was sealed.

I saw literally stacks of news ones at Derann Open Days in the 1980s, and one or two other shops, and they were always sealed.

Thanks for all the comments. According to the eBay seller my film has now been posted so I will report back later when it arrives.

Cellophane, not shrink-wrapped, that latter device hadn't come into its own till the 80's - Anything before that was cellophane-sealed, slightly loose, but not airtight - Shorty

On the same subject, but MGM digests were these shrink wrap? Sure the ones I bought were not, they had a sticker to stop you opening the box.

The film has arrived, Universal 8 2511, Inspector Willoughby in "Rough and Tumbleweed". The shrink-wrap was the original which was yellowing slightly, it certainly had not been re-wrapped.

The film was actually a Castle print, in Eastmancolor with a date code of 1976. Colour quite reasonable. The film was still taped down, inside was a sticker to fix to the outside of the plastic case, plus a pre-paid card to send to Universal 8 Film in New York, "Yes, I would like to receive your free film magazine, packed with inside movie insights and upcoming product".

I guess I'm a little too late to take advantage of this offer.
