I have Bauer projectors in Super 8 and 16mm and most of them have fitted carrying cases.
Did Elmo also sell similar cases for their projectors? I am, of course, familiar with the black cases which the ST1200 series came in, but were there cases for other models?

Eumig and Bolex sold combined speaker and projector carrying cases in the mid 70s for the Eumig 800 range and the Bolex equivalents. A little later when projector cases became hard to get I housed my Yelco DS810 MT Super 8 projector in a LP (12inch records) carrying case. Come to think of it are there any LP cases still available?

Never seen any, my GS1200 just as the standard black cover. Considering the price of them it should have been a proper case.

It would be great if a 'flight case' ideal for the GS was available, but it would have to be light or lifting the projector would need 2 people!

I think Adrian has the reason that Elmo never made a hard case for the GS1200. The projector is barely liftable now, and I can't imagine any body wanting to carry an additional 10lbs of case weight. Adrian has a great idea of a 'flight case' , with a hard shell, on wheels, with a retracting handle. I will have to look around to see if there is anything suitable.
I think Elmo could have easily reduced the weight of the GS by 10 lbs by using thermoplastic covers, plastic knobs etc. But that would have come at the expense of durability. Thank goodness they stayed with metal.

You guys are now talking about GS-1200, but Maurice's question is still valid, what about a hard case for ST-800 or ST-600? have you seen any?

The black ST-1200 case is fine for the ST-800, and as far as I know the ST-600/ST-180 too.

Hi gents, I uploaded this idea of having a custom made light weight carry case for the gs1200 elmo many months ago on this forum, and even got the manufacturer lined up to do a one off for me, not one person on this forum came forward with any interest.

Paul did make a reference when he made a reply on the postings of a home made case for the ST1200, but, I too, cannot find any other further comments about a custom made case for the GS-1200.

I searched for my post too, and could not find it either. The idea was to approach a company that custom makes the flight cases for band and group pa's, there are so many new materials now which are strong and would not add much weight to the already heavy gs1200.I had already breached the subject with them and were keen to see what they could do for me. My intention was to take my gs over to them and the original gs box and see if they could copy the clever design of the elmo box with the cutout, this would allow the polystyrene inners to be retained for protection.My other idea was to make a clip on attachment for the elmo 1200ft reels to pop on the sides, they could make the box the same colour as the cardboard case and print on the sides the same original designs. They said it could be made in fibre board, and any thing could be included in the makeup of it, like a solid base, feet on the bottom, inner compartments etc, I suggested a flat pack style that could be sent easily through the post, so when received the inserts could be put in to expand out the box. I thought the elmo box was a simple but effective design with the handle through the box arrangement so why change it, no handle to brake off because its already attached to the machine. If we could get some wide interest in this, perhaps if the a design is approved a run of 25 say, may get them cheaper for all on the forum, because once the machine is setup you may as well run off a few.

One reason for the lack of response might be because the title of the thread "Boxes anyone?" is fairly vague. You might consider starting a new thread, specifically about cases for the GS. And yes....I am interested.

To get back on topic, Maurice, the only hard Elmo case I've ever seen was for the ST-1200 series.

Hi Doug, well spotted, I thought I was going mad !!!!. The company make light weight flight cases for camera crews, and those brave guys heading across the artic when weight is of vital importance and keeping it down. They have all manner of materials and manufacturing techniques for getting this right for us and were very helpful. I will re contact them now and see what they can do for us. I will try and get a breakdown of what any extra bits cost above and beyond the standard look alike box. If anyone has any ideas about what they would like to see please let me know and I will ask them.

Members will notice that our Moderator has moved this thread into the 8mm Forum. As my question relates to 8mm and 16mm I originally entered it in "General Yak".

I have five 16mm Elmo projectors, all have slip-over covers, but it would be nice to have a proper fitted case as my Bauer P8 has.

Most of my Super 8 Elmos are in their original cardboard boxes with the exception of my three GS-1200 which have slip-over covers. A fitted case for the latter models could be quite a heavy item. My 16mm P8 Bauer box has handle on each end, plus the handle in the centre top which is perhaps only for handling the case when it's empty.

I brought my Fumeo projector to a repair point (l'Atleier de Célestin in Paris) and saw another projector (the same as mine)that had a soft dust cover. I suppose it will be almost impossible to find one as if you have a cover like this you also have the projector and don't want to keep it to protect your projector. So, it would be nice to find a source for having cover or boxes for our projectors.

It would be nice if we could go to a cine dealer and order a carrying case for s specific projector. Perhaps a general purpose case could be manufactured which would hold most Super 8 projectors and a much larger case for 16mm machines.

Dominique's comment about his Fumeo reminds me that my Fumeo 9914 has its own fitted case with the name "Fumeo" on the outside. But of course, this is not really a Fumeo, it's made by Silma and is a Bauer clone.
