Here's another universal 8 two reeler to look out for.
After the title sequence,we witness a old priest telling a young man the story of Kharis. The old priest passes to the young man a chain, the young man, played by Turhan Bey,vows revenge by going to the U.S.A,and claim back, both Kharis and his beloved.
In a small Amercian town,we see a shadow, dogs get scared, and we see a elderly man, getting ready for bed.
The window opens, and the figure of Khairs(Lon Chaney Jr);enters the room, and with his strong grip, kills the old man.
As the mummy slips away;the old man's family, are left puzzled.
Molded is found on the old man's neck..the police are at a loss.
Turhan Bey,is of course,Khairs's watcher, and the next night sends
him out, this time,it's the sister of the old man,who gets it.
The watchman witteness,this attack,but has a stroke,and can't tell the police anything.
We cut to the train station, were we meet Babe Hanson(Wallace Ford);as he talks to his former partners son,John Banning(John Hubbard);as they drive by car. That night,Babe, meets up with Khairs, and comes to a sticky end.
The law is getting desparte now,so they call on the services of
Professer Norman(Frank Riecter);he confirms,that the dirt around each victims throat,is indeed,moled.
The high priest, meanwhile, has turned his attentions,to Isobel(Elyse Knox);and sends out the mummy to capture her.
This it does, but as the high priest is about to give Isobel, the tana fliud;the local rent-a-mob arrive. The mummy takes the girl away;as the high priest confronts the mob.
A shot is heard, the preist falls, and the mob give chase.
We are now back at the house ,where it all began for the firey climax...
This is,in my view, one of the better Universal8 releases, from years gone by.
Iwould point out however, that if the one reeler pops up,buy it too, because there is about a minute of film, not in this two reeler.Still has good print and sound, for it's age.Another to add
to the horror fan's collection.Recommend.Andy.

Thanks for the review Andy, there's the U-8 400ft edition of this on the bay at the moment but at 39.00 euro's it's a bit pricey.

Many thanks for another great review Andrew.
As "Mummy" pictures go this was probably Universals lowest budget offering, relying on a vast resume of their earlier movie "The Mummy's Hand" told by Stephen Banning with flashbacks (this would have made a great super 8 digest but was never released) as well as stockshots of the marching villagers with their flaming torches from "Frankenstein". But because of this it makes a great two reeler as once all of the earlier films scenes are removed it made it a very easy title to edit. I've got all the other Universal "Mummy movies" full length on 16mm, but I never bothered with this title as the U8 two reeler is just so good.

Finally managed to lay my hands on this one [Smile]

It's like brand new,not one scratch on it,great picture and sound [Cool]

a very nice edit,i'll have to look into the music used on this as i'm sure i heard scores from The Wolfman and Son Of Frankenstein

You are right Peter. The score is the same as Son of Frankenstein and The Wolfman.Rember those were low budget movies.Andy.

I had almost all the Castle 200' horror reels as a kid, but only ever got the 50' of MUMMY'S TOMB. Not sure why, as this as gradually become one of my favorite films. When I finally did see the 200', it was a disappointment. Much of the footage seemed poorly chosen, and I believe that the sequence of much of it was needlessly changed.

I won the 400' foot reel on eBay just to see what was in it, then discovered the above review. Oh well, at least it sounds like a great digest!

"Sounds like a great digest." How ironic. I finally got my 400 reel, borrowed my parents' projector...and the bulb is burnt out. At least I HOPE that's the problem, since I just ordered another bulb. Ran the film through the projector and based on the audio, I'd say it's an excellent digest! I've cut this 400' reel in my mind many times, and for once the actual release matches my choices almost exactly. I never unsderstood why the 200' from Castle spent so much time on the flashback/stock footage from THE MUMMY'S HAND. Why not just also release a digest of THE MUMMY'S HAND. And THE MUMMY'S CURSE too! I would assume low sales on the mummy titles, but then why expand them to 400'? Guess I'll never know.

It's the Mummy's Curse on your projector, Marshall. Beware the Mummy!

I've always thought these Mummy films were always kind of dumb fun.

I mean, after all, all the person would have to do is run like heck out of there! Mummy's can only run so quick. Now, if a mummy could tele-port himself in a blink of an eye right in front of you, then that's different!

But, what are they going to do when they catch you, proceed to take forever to wrap you up? (Like, your just going to SIT there and be wrapped up for, oh, thrity minutes by a slow moving undead!). Make mummy's cannibalistic, now, that would be cool.

There's something to fear ... Cannibalistic Mummy's!!

Somebody on the forum is shouting at they're computer ...

"It's a bloody movie, not reality!!"

Eh, I'm just going off!

I did run across this print in the past and it was worth a watch!

Could somebody please do a review of the Derann release of that 1959 scope release of the Mummy?

Osi,

You mean the review that Andy Wilson was kind enough to post?
That print is flat.

My mistake Doug, thanks for clearing that up.

Was there a scope Mummy feature on Super 8?

I know there was a German scope release of the Brendan Fraser 1999 "The Mummy". I have a print and it's spectacular.
Here's another thread about the Hammer film and problems with Reel 4.

Well, I got a new lamp for the old Bell & Howell, but still nothing. Everything runs, just no light. Any suggestions?

Marshall,

You should start a new thread about your B&H problem in the 8mm Forum section, as opposed to "Print Reviews". Thanks and good luck!

Finally got my projector issues mostly sorted out a few months ago, and darn if Universal 8's 400' digest of THE MUMMY'S TOMB isn't one of best-edited reels out there. Perfect scene selection IMO. MUMMY'S GHOST...not quite so good.

Of all the Thriller ones issued out of U-8, THE MUMMY is exceedingly hard to locate - Not impossible, but quite a task - Shorty
