  • Pathe Imp Resistor Asbestos?

Apologies for a second post on this subject. I just want to make sure I’m taking the correct precautions with my collection and have newly become aware of the wider uses of asbestos. Worth saying I would not use the original transformer, I would use a modern variable one BUT…

Does the transformer in the Pathe Imp contain an asbestos board? Or is it another material. Ceramic for example.

These images are taken from a listing rather than my own which I opened the original box for yesterday and noticed the block and did not disturb it beyond moving the box, the closing and sealing it.

these images seem to show a white substance and dust deteriorating from it.

Any knowledge very much appreciated as can’t find anything online!

I just want to know how to handle it/safely store it. And I think having the info out there for others would be very worthwhile.

Most of the Pathescope pre war projectors were supplied with a resistance for the lamp and later for both lamp and motor as with the 200B for example instead of a transformer. They may have asbestos content in the windings support as do the variable resistance of the speed control but as mentioned in your previous post it is only a hazard if it is disturbed. Obviously the surface gets dusty over a period of time and is noticeable as it is burned off for a short period when used after not being used for a period of time. Replacing with a transformer is the obvious economical way to proceed. You could dispose of it as a small electrical at your local council tip or keep it wrapped. I have had a 200B with a resistance for about 60 years with no signs of the windings support disintegrating. What is more important is to replace the cable from the mains plug to the resistance and possibly within the projector itself. Hope I am not taeaching grandma to suck eggs!😉
