Hi all recently inherited 2 x projector and films off my grandads Bell & Howell 1695 just wondering if anyone has an idea on what would be worth thank Ben Barr

    Benjamin

The Bell & Howell 1695 hails from 1980, thus it is now over 40 years old.

Unfortunately Bell & Howells can suffer with a defective worm which would only make such a projector suitable for spares. A replacement worm and a general overhaul would cost over £200 for a professional repair.

Take a look at an eBay offering:-

They were just placed singly on eBay, They were sold as tested and working, They were at a Buy It Now price (No Auction) I could probably got a bit more if I had wanted to wait but sold them as a quick turnaround.

Regarding B&H machines (TQ1,2 3) is that unless they have a new worm drive they can be considered potentially faulty. They were all built with a worm drive that seemed ok 40+ years ago, but eventually they all crack. When a machine is listed on ebay, and mentions that it has good worm gear, it will over time become unusable and need to be repaired. It may already have a tiny crack starting the failure process. Only one that is listed (which is quite rare) as having a NEW worm drive, is the only option for piece of mind to a buyer if they understand what they are after. Most of what is offered on Ebay will fail, or have already failed. Sellers on that site do not know anything about this and will ask silly money from a buyer who also does not know about this.
They may well say 'the motor turns and the light comes on' implying that it is good for use, but it means nothing. If the machines you have are unknown then it may be better to sell them off cheaply, and just be honest. For perspective, I recently had one professionally serviced which cost me £325, though the machine itself was only £50 (on top). I suspect the cheap ones sell better because they are more likely to be purchased for repair.

Martin above with his posting has very succinctly made a good point about second-hand Bell & Howell 16mm projectors and their dreaded worm issue.

So sound like a box of worms then I just won’t them to be look after and if I’m working order just to be enjoyed

B&H guru Kevin Brown in Nottingham, charges £350 for a worm gear change and overhaul. FWIW I was offered a 1695 yesterday for £25. Also not all replacement worm gears are equal, so if I was buying for anything other than spares, I would be factoring in £350 and a trip to Nottingham.

                              Martin Davey,

I could very easily take umbrige with that comment, which borders on scaremongering, we have an eBay shop that specialises with this type of equipment, we ensure our equipment is serviced and refurbished inspected and tested before despatch, our prices represent the amount of work put into each item. We have our own workshop to service and repair any of our stock. We are not the only ones on eBay to do this.

Please do not assume just because something is for sale on ebay it is overpriced rubbish that will fail or that the seller knows nothing about the item. Read the listing fully and if unsure talk to the seller beforehand.

All used equipment is now getting old and will eventually fail, we all know that, all we can do is try to prolong its life as long as possible. If we say a unit is fully tested and working we mean it is fully tested and working not " the lamp comes on and it makes a noise.
