A relative of our had tons of 16mm home movies from the 1920’s to the 1940’s (they were wealthy and could afford it). They even had color footage of the aftermath of the hurricane of 1938 in New England! Historians would kill for that footage! Also some great footage of the Golden Gate Bridge sometime around 1940. The last time I saw these films was around 1978, but the color was still pristine!(Kodachrome of course) I had possession of these films for a number of years, but that side of the family wanted them back. Those people are now deceased. I hope the films were passed down to someone who will cherish them!

I got one from E-Bay a few years ago: Long Island Architects' Fishing Trip.

It's very well done: obviously one of the Architects was a pretty decent amateur filmmaker and it's nicely edited and titled. It's a huge rarity among my 16mm films: it's silent.

It's a little glimpse into how day to day life has changed in the 90ish years since this one was made. There are all these guys out for a day's fun fishing, wearing collared shirts, ties and jackets. Meanwhile, I have not worn a tie to work since 1991! (If I am wearing one, it means someone has died, someone is getting married or someone (-and that would be me...) is interviewing for a job.)

Now, it's not the Architects or the fishing that made me buy this thing. It's the local history. The place names here are ones that I visit all the time, as a native and still a local. What's sad here is given all the time that has passed, the places themselves have changed enough that very little just leaps out at me, so I could say "I was right there two weeks ago!".

Since these scenes take place in our local harbors, there have been easily ten decent sized hurricanes to change the scenery in between then and now anyway. (There is very little permanence in life, especially when there's an ocean next door.)
