  • Wanted - LPP Print of "Hoppity Goes To Town" or "Mr Bug Goes To Town"

    Hello everyone,

I thought I would put this out here again. I am still looking for a nice LPP print of "Hoppity Goes To Town" or "Mr Bug Goes To Town" in super 8 or 16mm. Or at least one with good color.

If anyone has any information on a print, please let me know.

    Thanks Ken

Ken, if end up with the choice, try getting the Red Fox release, as, it's on low fade and is the complete edition of the film. The Derann version, while far more common and also LPP, is an edited, by about six minute version of the film. Be careful, some earlier Derann Hoppities were printed on early Fuji, and will have purpled by now.

      Hi Osi

thanks for the information. Yeah I’ve been looking for a Red Sox for years and just never seem to find one. I had a Duran Duran Duran Duran print last year and it was brand new, The original box had never been open but it was completely faded. ☹️

Hey, would take you to eat or 16 of a nice fruit

Hi Ken. I’ve always had my eye out for a non faded print of Hoppity as well! I love that film. You are in San Francisco? I’m in Monterey. Next time I’m up that way maybe we could get coffee or lunch? I haven’t had the company of another film aficionado since the 80s! 😆 and I work in television production!

Also Ken they aren’t showing newly restored Fleischer Superman prints at the Charles Schultz museum in a couple of weeks. I may be going.

I should add that either Derann or another super 8 supplier, released on Low Fade, the trailer for Hoppity Goes to Town. Another factoid! On the Red Fox print, while it does have the "Hoppity Goes to Town title card, it also has the actual original leader, which says "Mr Bug Goes to Town ", which means that the Red Fox print is struck from a very early generation print, and this is born out in that it doesn't have that slightly dupey look of the Derann print, but has a sharper image and better contrast to the image. I honestly do not know how many prints Red Fox struck of this feature, and If all were on low fade, but keep searching diligently for the Red Fox. I have both the Red Fox and Derann on low fade, and the Red Fox is by far, the more impressive. You see a lot more of the image, background wise, due to the great early generation contrast to the source material!

I had back in the day a beautiful Red Fox print but sold it. I once bid on an original Technicolor print in another country but went over the price I was willing to pay. Had it been a USA auction I probably would have bid higher.

I have the Derann 'Hoppity.. ' but how do I determine if it's a later LPP release or the earlier Fuji? I should mention I'm unable to screen this at the moment but is there any information on the leader to indicate which release it is?

This is probably a 'Newbie' question.. apologies. I am a Newbie!

A Fuji print will have a purplish hue over time. It depends on when your print was struck. Earlier Fuji will go purple, later (late 70's/early 80's), may still have good color now, but will fade. Fuji will be marked as such in the sprocket area, same with LPP or Eastman. Eastman will be red by now.

Thanks for the info Osi! I've inspected my reels and I can't see any indication of LPP, Fuji or Eastman between the sprockets. Perhaps I'm missing something. I do suspect it's an early non LPP.. most likely Fuji or Eastman.

The leader however is a 'mish-mash' of information though. Apart from the expected 'Hoppity Goes to Town' etched inscription, there's also a small 'Mr. Bug Goes to Town' typeface followed by a larger 'MR HOPPITY GOES TO TOWN' ( note the 'MR' ) followed by 'Ivy Release' and 'N'tl Release' before running into the Derann promo and then the feature.

Is this typical of the Derann release?

My apologies to you Ken as I fear I'm derailing your 'Wanted' thread with my questions and I'll refrain from clogging it any further.

My Hoppity print from Derann is on AGFA stoc. The only marking on the edge of the reel I checked is AG2S. AG shows Agfa and the rest just the indication of the place it was on the 16mm printing spool before slitting.

Frankie, I think yours is one of the earlier in the 70's prints, as I am pretty sure that later Derann LPP prints omitted the "Ivy Films" info, and just started out with the Hoppity Goes to Town title card.

A correction, my LPP Hoppity does not have the original leader, and it starts approximately 15 frames ( lost count), before opening "Hoppity" title card, so it might have had the Ivy logos at one time
