NEW Import PLANET OF THE APES (1968) 400'

Moderator's Note: This digest is a Super 8mm print of Philip's digital edit. He commissioned to have this printed in Italy.

I just received my new Super 8mm edit from Europe of 1968's wonderful iconic film - PLANET OF THE APES. We are all familiar with this movie and fortunately this new edit hits all high points of the movie. The digest starts with the crash of Taylor's ship the Icarus into Lake Powell - well a fictitious lake on the planet where Apes rule - referred to as the inland sea.

Action moves immediately to the famous 'hunt' scene in the cornfield and we get Taylor's injury and capture and the great line up of Gorilla's having their picture taken with their catch of the day. "Smile !".

Soon Taylor escapes where he is caught again in a net and reminds the simians "to get their stinking paws" off of him. It truly is a 'madhouse' for Taylor in the events that follow. He is put on trial and mocked by the panel of 3 Orangutans including the nefarious Dr. Zaius. Zira and Cornelius soon break Taylor out of the prison and they all head to the beach where the cave with the human artifacts are. We see the fight with Zaius and the Gorillas. Taylor leaves with Nova on horseback as he is warned by Zaius - "You may not like what you find ... ".

i have always wanted this on Super 8mm Sound but the prints I have found have all faded. Plus as far as I know there was not a 400' version. It's nice to be able to acquire this movie finally on Super 8mm. Running time is 20:55. Picture Sound and Color are all excellent. This is printed on low fade Kodak polyester stock. The film is presented FLAT with black bars at the top and bottom.

The solution in Italy is a great value for the expense or as some may say "Bang for the Buck". Purchasing from Germany would have been about 5 times as expensive when you factor in the cost of a 16mm negative to strike prints from. Thanks for looking!!

I remembered I left that off and have changed it to FLAT with black bars at the top and bottom - letterboxed.

Another great print, Phillip! Your an artist! Those screenshots really show off how sharp those Italian prints are! That's not saying that Andec doesn't do good printing, but it's great to know that there ARE options, and at a fraction of the price. Great color saturation, and good realistic tones. I know that the print stock is Polyester, but does anyone know as to whether both Andec and the Italian firm use the same stock? If so, how is it that the Italian firm can have such accurate color, but Andec, with the same stock, tends to have a bluish caste to the color? This has tended to be the trend from Andec, as the many digests I have from Andec show. Having said all of that, I'm so glad that, in this day and age, we even have not one film lab, but options for our insatiable desire for new cine! As before, many thanks for the review, Phillip! Later Derann prints often had a bluish cast. I think it was the printer being unable to add enough fltration to corrrect or needed an expensive overhaul that the lab would not pay for.

Since I project on a large screen, the Andec/negative quality is worth it for me.

Robert, you should let THE REEL IMAGE know which titles you are interested in. It will only make financial sense for anyone to sell prints produced at ANDEC if enough buyers are interested in a given title - so that the 1-3K euros spent to create a 16mm negative will be offset. I base this price on what has previously been quoted to me. Current pricing or special arrangement pricing with ANDEC may be different.

Like I've said before in the post titled "Alien 600 ft" which has since been removed for some reason(why?),
I would respect some other seller's release by not releasing the very same title or WORSE, the very same edit of the title.
Just not a nice thing to do.
But that's just me..I guess.

Robert - it took me a few minutes to understand your ongoing defense of The Reel Image. I just saw you featured in the most recent newsletter. He graciously praises your box art work. I have not seen it but I most certainly won’t criticize it.

I don’t understand why in response to this post (and the ALIEN post) that you continue to suggest that what I am doing is not “nice” to The Reel Image. Your comments seem self serving - only to suggest that “you would never do anything like that”!

I don’t know you and you don’t know me. I have worked with the Reel Image a couple of years now. And FYI I recently worked with them on their upcoming release THE MUMMY’S HAND. I was happy to!!

Further - because you say things before you know - I ordered Planet of the Apes and Alien in June of last year. This was after Lee Mannering passed me over for the 200’ Alien release. There was a discussion of the 400’ release at the time but here we are a year later and it hasn’t shipped yet. So I decided to do my own version. The intent was to have these two prints in my collection. One and done. No competition to anyone out there.

The Reel Image has a good business and a good following. He can handle competition and likely doesn’t need your commentary denigrating other’s attempts at owning their prints for their Super 8 collection.

this isn't about Steve, not at all.
My view regarding this would be the same if someone was selling a title you were working on for sale on Super 8.
So it isn't about anyone in particular, I just think that the market is already so minuscule why any competition at all.

Think I'm right in saying Italy charge 6 Euro per minute they film off a screen, striped and dubbed. Typical wait time for delivery from people I know use them is 12 to 14 months.

Nice to see some colour on Apes as the old 200's are long gone pink

It's seven Euros per minute of film these days. Actual shipping is fast.
