CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND SPECIAL EDITION CinemaScope feature length prints
I am SOOO glad that I already own an even rarer scope copy of the 1978 version of this feature! I find the screenshots fascinating. Anybody who knows the history of this super 8 release, knows that there was somewhere near 20 to 30 prints of this feature, before Speilberg put the kibosh on it, but the color of the screenshots are what gets me. These are all from the same negative and lab. unsqueezed shots on the one auction have that super 8 look to them, but the squeezed scope shots, on the other auction, almost seem to look "processed" to me, just little too good. Maybe I am the only one who notices it?

It wasn't anything to do with Spielberg. Columbia ended the legitimate deal early. Reasons for this are super 8 mythology but suggestions were that unauthorized 16mm copies were found at the lab the day a Columbia rep payed a visit.
There were three of this this title in Northern Ireland alone. Isn’t a title people advertise they own. I think Mike Dimmock joked about Derann doing night work.
From what Jed Jones said on Facebook, the rep was getting too much inquiries regarding future releases and I guess she couldn't handle the pressure. The 16mm story must have been a rumor or something, which, I thought when I heard it, was strange as a reputable company like Derann would do something like that. I found the Facebook article:

Unless I'm horribly mistaken Derann never operated a lab, merely used the services of a number of labs across the country. Who knows what goes on when no-one is looking

They mainly use Rank and Buck labs but when those two closed they used Lab North owned by Yorkshire TV. (Until YTV decided that Super8 wasn't for them).
Just to clarify, this short lived super 8 release was a genuine authorized release by Derann with a Columbia supported deal. In fact after the initial announcement, the price was reduced after further royalty negotiations.
But yes, "imports" of other titles were sold too.
And the story at the lab was either at Rank or Buck. No deal was done to release 16mm versions...
Northern Lab was owned by the mighty ITV and closed as 16mm television production all but ceased in the wake of HD production.
The Close Encounter deal was legal. I have the feeling it was other titles being printed caused the problems. Didn’t Derann also use a German lab for a time or was that cover for those infamous imports.
