  • Crazy amount for a Stooges' 400'

Can anyone explain to me what the deal is on this large final price on eBay for Micro-Phonies? It was 2 people going after it all week. I'm happy with it but shocked. I've been buying and selling and collecting film since I was a kid in the 70s and never expected this...

Mark, there is absolutely no logic to the super 8 sales on eBay or elsewhere these days. About two years ago, I was trying to gather the money to purchase one of the new JAWS digests, so I decided to sell my Universal 8 digest 2X400ft of JAWS. Now it did have absolutely pristine color, an excellent print, but I was shocked when It made 425 dollars, nearly a good hundred over what I needed, and I got a beautiful new JAWS digest in the deal! No matter how overjoyed I was to sell that old, slightly scratched digest, I still, to this day, feel that I ran to the bank, laughing happily, but I also almost felt a little embarrassed to have it sell for that much. I think that all we can do, is just enjoy the ride, while the ride exists. Sooner or later, the folks with more cash than brains, will dwindle and die out of the super 8 market, and all of us can go back to business as usual.

I finally watched Dave’s Jurassic Park 600’ tonight. I had a problem with my first print and waited months for this replacement. I had been getting soured on the hobby for the past fewer years. Enjoy my few Derann Disney prints once in a while but honestly between the projector problems and the quiet not so satisfying older prints I had wa ready to just give up. The prices and the fact that my digital projector is mostly superior and quite cheap to watch anything did me in. But wow I had a great time watching this film. Great editing and quality. I may stick around for a while.

No doubt the first bidder was happy to start with his $25 bid, but finally had to give up at $500.
It then sold to the second bidder for $510.
As Mark said, a crazy amount for a 400ft Three Stooges.

I just noticed that there is a copy of Derann's full feature releases of Aliens currently sitting at a starting bid price of £ 999.00 and a copy of Jason and The Argonauts at £ 699.00 .

Turns out the ridiculous high bidder for Micro-Phonies ghosted me. I think it was a setup since I can not even contact the only other bidder to see if he wants it. Very suspicious. So it's back on eBay.

The bidders -- based upon their IDs and feedback seem legit -- IT makes no sense. Mark you should report them to eBay if you have not already.

Mark - To answer your initial question, and not being able to monitor the way your bids were actually placed, this could be the likely scenario of what happend and does happen.

Lets refer to the bidders as Moron 1 (M1) and Moron 2 (M2)

M1 is the type of person who thinks he can get what he wants when he wants. He really wants this item and so puts a very high price on it so that any other bidder will be outbid and he wins his item. He may expect to pay slightly over the odds for it so puts in a ridiculous amount, as in this case, to secure the victory. At this point, of course, as bid #1, the price stands at the starting price.

Unfortunately for him, M2 comes along with the same attitude. Obviously, he cannot see M1's maximum bid, so does the same, thinking it will secure him the item.

That is when the computer goes into meltdown. As both parties have bid several hundred dollars each, the computer merely goes around $5 higher than the second highest bid and tells M1 he is (eventually) the winner...... at $100's !

M1 wins. Thinks " Oh SH** !! Not likely!" and becomes the ghost you encountered.

M2 then gets a "second chance offer" and thinks and does exactly the same.

Net result.... they don't pay, you have to re-list. Please make sure you report the winner at least.

Sorry about some of the language, but people like this on Ebay really REALLY annoy me. I hope you eventually get a good price for it.

Mark, your not the first person this has happened to, nor will you be the last. Hopefully, you'll get a legit buyer, even if you end up getting less.
