  • "In Old Santa Fe" Niles Super 8 magnetic sound feature for sale SOLD

CONDITION: Stored in a temperature controlled, non-smoking environment. Received light use. Original box. Film in excellent condition. Splices at tails and heads only to build up onto 1200' reel and break down back to the original 400' reels. Some very light scratches come and go BUT these may be from the original source and not the print itself.

PRINT HISTORY: This film was purchased from the original owner over 30 years ago and has had very light use since. Both of us took excellent care of our film libraries. I had spliced all 400' segments onto a single 1200' reel (run time is about 62 minutes), but kept the original box, reels, heads, and tails as I did for all my features. When I decided to start downsizing, I broke this feature down and put it back in its original state. There are only six tape splices as follows: at reel one tails, at reel four head, and at both heads and tails for reels two and three. While there are some light scratches here and there, I began to question whether these were on the print or the source material. Likely both. Overall, the film and box are in excellent condition, considering that they are about 45-50 years old.

FILM BACKGROUND: While a 1934 "B" western, it is an important one. This was Gene Autry's first screen appearance. The highlight is his rendition of "Down In Old Santa Fe" and was the start of Gene's long, illustrious career. The film was also the beginning of the end for star Ken Maynard. Having once rode with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as a trick rider and starred in many silent films, he became Hollywood's first singing cowboy. (Gabby Hayes has a thing or two to say about that at the very start of the film.) H.B. Warner also gives a standout performance. Maynard's quarrelsome nature eventually got him fired by the head of Mascot Pictures. He was supposed to star in "The Phantom Empire" (1935) but Autry replaced him.

FILM SYNOPSIS: In a nutshell, Maynard plays "Kentucky" who loses his famed horse Tarzan in a rigged race and then gets framed for a stagecoach holdup, the theft of $20,000 in gold dust, and the murder of the driver.
