  • Tips on the Bauer T183 Projector

Just introducing myself as a new member, Bruce Parry in the UK .Been involved with Super 8 for many years. I will post some good tips on the Bauer T183 automatic duo play projector re belt change and deteriorating wiring to the bulb very soon.

Hello All, back again, I was devastated when the drive belt snapped on my Bauer T183 automatic duoplay sound projector. I love this projector, and it has served me well for many, many years. 600ft spool capacity, dual gauge, 24 and 18 frames per second. I used it much for children's film shows and my own Super 8 home movies. Taking the back cover off, there it was, a square drive belt snapped! How can I fix this without dismantling the lower drive shaft and pulley wheel, definitely did not want to do this! I tried many adhesive and super glue methods, hopeless, the tension is too great. Order a new belt, you still can't get it around the lower drive shaft, nightmare! It takes an engineer to know an engineer, but what a ridiculas configuration to change a drive belt. Here's what I did in absolute desperation...the top shaft (brass) runs the cooling fan, this can be removed with the grub screw in the recessed casting section. Unscrew, with Allen key, quite small, but don't risk unscrewing completely and risk dropping into projector. With a flat end screwdriver resting on the casting, the cooling fan shaft can be eased off, it can be a faff, and get stuck on the blades, but move them around to get the fan shaft off. This gives you a larger workin area. The belt, now broken, should be put under the lower drive shaft and the broken two ends brought together and fixed with two dots of Super glue. The drive belt is now whole again. Take a normal paper stapler and staple either side of the break, it has to be Central accurate. This is now your new stregth, flatten protruding stapes underneath. Now run super glue over the top of staple and belt, now wind black adhesive electrical tape in a spiral covering the repair. The shiny surface of the electrical tape will run nicely in the lower and top drive spools. New re insert the top fan section onto the shaft making sure it goes all the way back to where it was before, tighten grub screw. If stubborn, just a drop of WD40 to help it slide back on, if more stubborn, flat head screwdriver and small hammer to tap/ put it back to the grub screw recess. Now fix top of repaired belt to the top recess wheel shaft. Mine ran a treat, run projector with no film forward (10mins), rewind (mins) to settle in. You can also cut a new square drive belt using this method. Your Bauer T183 will be running lovely again, mines fab. If any other deterioration points on belt, rub puncture repair kit glue (rubberised) into cracks for strength. Good luck folks.
