  • Cleaning 8 and S8 films before digital scan

    Ні,

I need to clean up some 8mm and Super8 films before digitizing them. Here are the supplies I have so far:
    • PEC pads
    • Film Guard
    • Nitrile gloves
    • Manual rewinder

I'm concerned about damaging the film. Anyone have tips or pointers? Specifically, once you run the film across the PEC pad with Film Guard on it, do you then go over the film again with a dry PEC pad? How saturated with Film Guard should the PEC pad be?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Does Filmguatd clean or is it more of a lubricant ?

you cant damage the film with film guard it lubes and cleans film, personally i use a few sprays on a pec pad then some more about 2-300ft depending on how dirty the film is i sometimes clean the film twice but everyone here will tell you how they do it, one thing it does do is get rid of some scratches its great stuff.
also be careful in case the film has any damaged sprockets they can catch on the pec pads if you go too fast you may break the film so watch out for that.

Indeed! I found myself using too much FilmGuard, so while winding the film back onto the supply reel, I used a dry PEC pad. Doing that removed even more dirt from the film while still leaving the film lubricated.
