It sure does! The next steps is to track down my grandfathers 8mm home movie collection. We don't know who ended up with it.

Jason,
I'm curious if your grandfather shot sound film. Being that you have a sound projector, that's a pretty good indication.
When I was a teenager back in the 70s and 80s, I shot Super-8, but only silent. Nobody I knew shot sound back then: it was "unusual to rare".
I have a couple of other people's amateur sound films (e-Bay), and they've held up just fine. If your grandfather's films are sound and have been properly stored, this could be a huge gift to you!
We have a friend in Brooklyn whose uncle shot a lot of Kodachrome at family events back into the 1960s. He'd splice them together onto 400 foot reels and stored them in a closet. When she inherited his brownstone, our friend discovered the box of reels in excellent condition. Every so often she visits us and brings a reel out: spends some time with her family and her own childhood.
Classically, when a home burns down, as long as everyone makes it out unharmed, the one thing people regret losing the most is their pictures: they matter a lot!

The Elmo I'm using was my dad's, different setup than my grandfather had. He had his own. All our family films have sound so far. I know my grandad did sound as well because I recall him having us all say Happy New Years and the year it was for the recording every year at dinner. Even though I was quite young, I recall quite vividly. The dozen or so films I've watched so far all held up pretty good. I think some could use cleaning though. I'd really like to find a copy of the Jungle Book. We used to borrow it from the library every year when I was a kid.
