  • What speed does commercial 8mm & super 8 movies run at

I’m not talking about sound films, I mean silent films, and not home movies, commercially released films like from Castle Films or Excel. If you have one for 16mm commercial films as well, I’d like to know. Thanks.

True silent films have various speeds from the days of silent movies which I’m not familiar with but others here can fill you in on them.
As for commercially produced films from Castle Films, Columbia, Ken Films, Disney and all the others released films that were made from Hollywood studios at 24FPS for sound titles. Therefore even silent 8mm and Super 8 of those films should be projected at 24FPS. Most 8mm and Super 8 silent projectors are manufactured at 18FPS as they were made mainly for people taking their own home movies that cameras film at 18FPS.
My favorite example of the difference of Castle Films running at 18FPS of a 24FPS movie is Have Badge, Will Chase. The scene with Costello in the disembarked sidecar going through the woods looks like Stop Motion photography at 18FPS. At 24FPS it’s much smoother motion but still a little jerky motion.
This difference in FPS is why there’s a difference in running time from silent to sound releases. There’s no difference in the content of the film, just the difference in the FPS assuming silent versions are run on silent projectors. If they’re run on sound projectors silent and sound have the same running time.
    Hope this helps you somewhat.

It's more technically correct to run a film originally made with a sound track at 24FPS, but to me the quieter transport at 18FPS works nicer without a sound track to cover it up. The difference in motion isn't usually noticeable, yet (for example) here an there an object falls and it looks a little like it fell on a planet with slightly weaker gravity! You also notice it when someone starts to walk: they seem a little slow getting going.
