Last summer I was able to visit the only analog film shop in Asia: Retro 8 in Tokyo, Japan. I did an interview with the owner, Tak Kohyama, about his business and Super 8 prints in Japan. This interview is in German (believe it or not), but I wrote English subtitles, so it is watchable for English speakers:

Joachim,
What a wonderful interview! Hearing about the parents' and chidren's groups pooling their resources to buy Super 8 films to show was fascinating. I have a few optical sound films from Japan and the packaging is excellent. I also loved Tak's tale of Super 8mm making him popular at school. Thank you for this!

Ich habe dein interesante Video ohne Untertitel angesehen, und ich habe...meistens verstanden!

(Gimme a break! -I'm only at level B1!)
What's nice about something like a hobby is it can allow people even from different parts of the world common ground and an instant conversation starter: this one is an excellent example!
I have one Japanese print: a railway film. It was a gift from a friend, so I appreciate it for that and call it an "honorary silent" since I can't play 8mm optical sound! (...or understand its Japanese narration!)

What a Delightful and thoroughly enjoyable interview! Nice to know with the amount of projectors being repaired, the hobby is doing well there. I was surprised that no mention was made of Single 8. Reportedly FUJI made a optical sound camera in the format that was only sold in Japan. Did you both go and have a Japanese Dinner afterward with Saké? 🙂

no, we had no dinner together, but I had a lot of good food (and Sake) during my 3 ½ weeks trip in Japan.
