  • Problem with sound striping

    Good day everyone,
I am seeking help/advice. I am trying to add the tape to the film but I am having a problem in trying to work out how you attach the tape to the film at the beginning as it seems that you clamp the tape to the film ahead of the glue applicator which means that you would have a loose piece of tape which would get jammed up in the projector. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

From what I remember from years ago you really need to have a very long leader on the film (assuming you are using a projector to pull the film through the striper) to allow the cement to dry before it has any pressure on it. Therefore any stripe tape that is not glued is removed when you take off the 4-5ft of leader.

Thank you Brian for the advice but I am concerned that the start of the film going into the projector will cause problems as the first bit of tape won't be glued to the film? Not sure if I am making sense.

Just cut it off before it gets to the projector, you migh have to be nimble though.

          Mike,

When I'm sound striping (with a Bolex-Weberling striper), I use a small piece of scotch tape to hold that first bit of stripe in position. As Brian suggested, I start that section in the leader so that the glue will take hold on the part where the recording will begin. After the striping is done, I rewind the film and let it sit for a day or two to make sure the glue has dried. Then I remove the scotch tape from the leader and cut the loose stripe off. I also cut the loose stripe at the tail, because there's always a short loose bit at the end.

I understand where you are coming from regarding the that bit of stripe right at the start going into the projector. I honestly cant remember how I got around that when I did my striping way back during the 1970s, I used the Rexette, the good thing about that machine is that it had a spring pressure rubber roller where the the stripe and film with the cement on it meets. I used the Bolex SM8 to pull the film with around 4 feet or more distance wise between the striper and the projector. The stripe to this day is still hanging on, however cleaning the edge of the film more than once is critical for the stripe to stick.

The thing also is that as you know once you start the projector you cant stop until the end as the cement would dry before the film gets to the stripe, best of luck with your striping, it does work but not on Polyester film.

Whow! and thank you guys so much for all the information, I am going to try all these ideas and hope I come right. One would think that the instructions that came with the machine would explain this problem.
