  • Elmo GS1200 shutter removal.

    Hello All,

I've got a european GS1200 (220 volt only) that has become so dirty from over use by me it has come time to do a clean since the old grease has dried up and the shutter and shaft mechanism are stiff. Having never done one of these before since I usually do the electronics I thought I'd put a few feelers out for advice on the best removal process. Thanks in advance. Joel

It's a big job Joel. I have replaced both my GS1200's with 2 blade shutters and it really boosts the screen illumination considerably. Definitely a worthwhile modification - as long as you no longer use or need 18fps operation (too much flicker). Best advice I can give you is to really study the relevant areas of the GS1200 Service Manual, available in the warehouse section of this forum (top of page). Here is a direct link to it:
    https://www.film-tech.com/warehouse/...200SERVICE.pdf

Here you will find all the necessary info to remove and replace the shutter, and how to re-phase it. And you must use magnetic tools to avoid washers, screws, pins etc from falling into the bowels of the machine during this process.
Good luck, do your homework, take your time, and you will succeed!

      Hello Paul,

Thanks for the service manual that will help. My biggest concern is my eyes! I've done big jobs like this. Having worked in Broadcast doing SP Betacam machines I'm a veteran of this stuff but it never gets easier. The worst job I've ever done is replace the bottom plastic loop former on a Eumig 938 and a 940. A truly horrible design. That said the grease on this machine has left me little option. While it's plausible the electric circuit has left the motor without enough juice to torque the motor there is no denying the grease is not making the job easier. One way or another I have to bite the bullet and do the job. Along with me eyes the other obvious problem is getting a decent area to lay all the parts as I do it. Either way I'll try take photos for everyone. Joel.
