  • Super 8mm sound cameras with a microphone in the handle

At CineSea's Saturday night show this past weekend, we screened a short documentary from 1979. One of the people involved was present and he mentioned using a Super 8mm sound camera with a microphone located in the handle. He did not remember the brand/model. I know the Kodak Ektasound line had a few of those. Were there any other cameras like that? Thanks.

Hi Doug, sorry to have had to miss CineSea this time.

The Braun Nizo Integral series of sound cameras had a telescoping boom mic built into the handle. The handle was the forward-slanted kind like Beaulieu's, so the mic would point downward a bit. Not the greatest idea for sound pick-up or positioning, but it must have seemed cool to the designers at the time 😊

      Hi Claus,

You were missed! Thank you for your post. It is a cool looking design, however I would think there's a good chance of the mic picking up handling noise.

I recall renting one of the Kodak Ektasounds in the 1977.... I do not recall any handling noise pick up. It worked well to film a wedding.

          Thomas,

Thanks. I thought since there is occasional handling noise when a boom pole is jostled, the same might be true here.

On the Nizo, you can pull out the microphone for 30cm (1 foot) as shown here in the last image:

Not sure whether you can do the same with the Kodak.

If the camera is held steady and fixed, I do not think handling noise was a problem.
