  • December 2009: The Very First CineSea

10 Years ago this Month, December 5th and December 6th, 2009, was the very first CineSea!

This was the original: it had many of the correct ingredients, but the recipe wasn’t quite refined just yet. As a matter of fact, it wasn’t even called “CineSea” that first time: that development came with CineSea 3 almost a year later. Right then it was “Film Collector’s Club International” and was renamed retroactively.

It wasn’t the same hotel as later either: this was our sole stay at the Bolero. It's a nice hotel, but wasn't the greatest fit for us. The Ocean Holiday started with “2” and lasted until “19” last Spring, and now it's the Shalimar.

This was the sole December Cinesea, and I remember snow roadside on the Garden State Parkway on the way home. The Fall-Spring format we now have at least makes the idea of a walk on the beach desirable! Open restaurants that time of the year become fewer and further between.

The very first Saturday Dinner happened that weekend, but quite by accident: a couple of us were standing around talking and somebody asked “Are you hungry?”, and that’s all it took. (-these days it takes reservations: lots and lots of them!)

There was no Saturday Night Show: which is one of my own favorites. -however, the crowd did march off to the Sea Theater for the first time.

Still the same: the tentative little seed that John Black and Shorty planted that weekend is thriving today. We showed up there mostly a bunch of Internet Acquaintances, but we’ve come away from it with real friendships that exist in the 3-dimensional world.

It shows you need to be willing to try things sometimes: it’s what it takes for good things to start!
