Why...Soitenly!!!
.
This is the Guide of Shame in its entirety.
The problem is the film runs along that nice smooth curve all the way to where it meets the lower sprocket and then takes a sharp bend downward to match the curve of the sprocket. There must be a lot of pressure here because this apex wears down enough that the film no longer is contacted at just the edges, but increasingly towards and then within the frame.
BTW: This is ST-1200HD. I think the others ST-1200s (-and STs in general) have different guides.
This guide was given to me some years ago, New in Bag(!), by a very generous 8mm Forum member when my original wore out. The odds of there being very many more like this are not at all promising.
The GS Folk have a whole list of mods they do on guides: these bullet-proofed with rollers added in the right places are an opportunity too.

I have had the all metal top guide from Wittner for several years now. It's expensive for sure, but it has a mirror finish and it really does the job.
I would be very concerned about using 3D Printed plastic film guides - the surface finish is very rough, nowhere near the highly polished surface of the original injection molded Elmo guides,
