  • Chuckleheads ...

I've recently ran into what appears to be a British silent film compilation series of super 8 releases, ( well, the sales tag on the box is in pounds), and it is titled "Chuckleheads", with two or three shorts per 400ft reel, with literally all silent film title cards not present, but with very 60's inspired, "cartoony" title cards for each short. Any info from any of you lads about who released these, Film company and history of them. Was this part of a TV show at one time? Very curious. Osi

    Osi,

The Chuckleheads was a 1960s TV show that took 2 reel silent comedies and edited them, adding sound effects & music. Mountain Films released a number of these on 8mm. Ben Turpin and Snub Pollard are in a few.

I have one of the ones with Ben Turpin! Were these a way to showcase British silent comedian's? I ask as I see a number of names that I didn't recognize. Another nice touch on these is that, on assorted releases, they included some of those "lantern" slides so common in silent cinema, with such expressions as "Ladies, remove your hats" or advertisements. It's something that I haven't seen from any other silent film compilations or releases on super 8.

This is just a guess on my part, but seeing the name Adrian Weiss as producer leads me to believe these clips are from the Weiss Brothers-Artclass collection. Adrian's father produced comedies with Snub Pollard (after he left Roach), Poodles Hanneford, Ben Turpin (after he left Sennett), Hairbreadth Harry, and the Winnie Winkle series. I'd bet money that clip was a Winkle comedy (her kid brother, Perry, had a "gang" of pals).

Yes! "Poodles" is one of the stars mentioned, (shown). I had thought that he was some kind of British silent films comedian. But then, like most people, my knowledge of silent film stars basically ends with Chaplin, Turpin, Keaton, Laurel and Hardy, Lloyd and the Keystone Cops.
