New (Summer 2025) Tariffs for S8 Imports to USA

Does anyone have any experience with new US tariffs on importing Super 8 film to the US? It’s all quite confusing!

I gather that if it's a "Gift" you can still import up to $100 at a time with no penalties, I hope that helps!

Hi!

That‘s correct: up to 100US$/85EUR and marked as „gift“ is still possible without hassle. However, when the goods aren’t marked as a present or when the value exceeds 100US$, then you‘ll have to switch to more expensive shipping options. (attached: info text from dhl)

I‘ve also attached a price list for Päckchen (small parcels) and Paket (standard parcels) from Germany to the USA with DHL. The shipping costs are now astronomically high.

Attention: When shipping from the USA to Germany, then the shipping costs are added to the goods‘ value. And then this sum is used to check whether you have to pay customs/import taxes or not. When this is also true for shipping to the USA, then for example the 10kg-parcel‘s shipping costs would reduce the allowed value of the shipped gift to only 8EUR…

Then you'd better dang well REALLY need that film from overseas these days! I have a package in the near future that's approximately 750.00, so "gift" is out the window! 😬. It just seems to me that "powers that be" will have to bring some sanity and realism to the whole proceedings, as, if shipping and tariffs get past a certain level, no one will ship, hence no commerce taking place and then no one wins. Tariffs and shipping gave to balance out at some point

I wonder, if it is a feature under 400 US$ it could be mailed as individual spools to get under the limit.

As good of an idea as that is, I think you'd end up spending more in total to get it to your door.

When sending it as a gift, ensure to wrap the item into gift paper and to add a „Merry Christmas“/„Happy Easter“/„Happy Thanksgiving“/„Happy Hanukah“/… card.
