  • 8mm/Super 8 Projectors With Sound

At the tail of the "old" Forum Frank Lea was asking if any members could recommend an 8mm/Super 8 projector with sound, preferably one with an audio output suitable for connecting to a separate amplifier. And also, one that spare parts would still be obtainable.
Taking the last question first, as most projectors are now about 40 years old the availability of new spares is very unlikely, most owners buy scrap or not working models to use for spares.
From my own experience I can recommend two sound projectors, both have an audio out facility.
    For Super 8 sound : Elmo ST-1200HD.
    For Regular/standard 8 and Super 8 (i.e. a dual gauge projector) : Eumig 824 Sonomatic.

Seems difficult to find a Dual 8mm SOUND projector - or I may not be looking in the right place. I would like to find one where I can run my silent 8mm / Super 8mm films as well as sound films should I buy them. Granted, I could just buy a good Super 8mm SOUND projector - but then I would have two projectors.

The EUMIG mentioned above seems like a possibility - are there any others forum members can recommend? Thanks much!

The Eumig S824 Sonomatic is a highly recommended dual 8 sound projector, if you can find one in full working condition. Make sure the projector is complete with both sets of gates and sprockets, and of course the power cord. Also make sure the sound system is fully functional on both magnetic tracks.

I would think that the obvious choice for a dual 8 sound projector would be any of the Eumig machines designed for both formats. As far as I know they are the only dual 8 machines that respect the difference between the audio and picture seperation. Most other dual 8 sound projectors will not be able to show standard 8mm with correct sound seperation (the sound will be about 1 second too early).

I have a Eumig 824 in its original box with inserts and all parts/accessories included.

I should point out that the earlier 800 series had duplicate sprockets, those not in use were stored within the side cover. But as the 824 has new additional features there is nowhere for such storage. These come on a separate adhesive plate which Eumig says should be be stuck on the projector in a suitable place. Regrettably, some previous owners have not done this and over time these parts just seem to disappear.

In my case, this plate is stored in a recess in the top polystyrene packing insert.

Note that in the 824 there are not two separate sets of sprockets. The standard/regular 8 sprockets are a fixture. For conversion to Super 8 small rings containing the Super 8 sprocket teeth are affixed to the sprockets. They are quite small and can easily be lost.

As Paul says above, it is always necessary to ensure that an 824 is complete with all parts. I recommend that a purchase is made on a face to face method which can confirm that they are all there.

I would be OK with a DUAL 8mm Projector that plays sound on SUPER 8 ONLY. Playing Standard 8mm Silent is fine. But I haven't seen one like that. I may not be looking in the right spot or querying properly. I would appreciate any nudges or pushes in the right direction.

Philip, as far as I know there is no such thing as a Dual 8mm projector that is designed to play sound on Super 8 only.
My original recommendation stands- look no further than a good WORKING Eumig.

i suspected that to be the answer. Thank you for your post.

So, i am looking at a EUMIG MARK S 810 D that has been serviced etc. and tested. Seems to have all the parts. What can anyone tell me about this projector - what to ask and what to look out for - thanks in advance.
