  • ELMO ST1200 Plays sound but really low.

Hello all. I have an Elmo st1200, plays mag/opt sound BUT it plays back the sound at a really low level, no amount of turning the volume up helps, you can just hear the sound thru the speaker. Any thoughts? I have both cleaned the mag head and demagnatised it, and optical lamp and pick up carefully cleaned. Your thoughts appreciated.

    Hi Mark,

This could be a classical candidate for the Elmo Switch Trick. The signals for the sound travel through multiple switch contacts (for examples: headphone jacks, external speaker jacks, the record key, etc.) and being that these are metallic, they oxidize. Unfortunately these signals don't have enough voltage and/or power to bust these oxide films, so the sound gets fainter and fainter until you find yourself full throttle on the volume control with nothing great happening out at the speaker.

So, unplug the machine. Go to every jack or switch associated with sound and plug and unplug or switch on and off about ten times each. If you don't have any 3.5mm plugs handy, start with the record key: it's the leading suspect in cases like this.

The joy of it is it's easy and it's free: always a good thing to try first.
