  • Dont sell on ebay!!!!!!!

Now we all know that Ebay is fully geared towards the buyer, with no safety net for sellers. After 21 years on Ebay as a seller of cine kit I am no longer using Ebay to sell. Why, and this is a warning to other sellers. I sell a Fujicascope SH30 on Ebay with free postage (plus in the description is a video I made of the projector working). Buyer receives and within a few days says the optical sound isn't working, wants to return it. OK I agree, I don't want any problems , then he says, 'tell you what Ill have a partial refund of £200' what!!! I offer £175, he accepts. He leaves a positive. Then a month later, out of the blue, he wants to return the projector as it doesn't work????? So eBay automatically accepts his return, now I have to repay him and pay for return postage. My argument is that as a seller you will never relinquish responsibility for your item, so DONT SELL ON EBAY. Id be interested to know if this buyer is on this forum. So I will only sell now in person, and not via a third party, and under the legality of Caveat Emptor. So beware film sellers. Stay safe.

    How distressing.
When you receive the return of the SH30 let us know what you find.

Totally disgraceful. I feel we need to continue to name and shame such buyers, so we can block them.

Every time I sell on ebay, I end up having to block sellers. Some classics so far: "Your film made my projector stop working. Please refund" and "You said there was a sound fault of low sound. Please refund as I cannot turn up the sound".

Then, some of the blocked buyers have the cheek to email and ask "why can I not bid on your item?"

I sympathise with you Mark and others. Likewise we wound it down to a fraction a bit ago as no matter how thoughtful and caring you can be to some buyers in the end you usually get taken advantage of UK wise, at least in my experience. It is more a minefield battle of words than anything else and like Si we have removed at request names from the blocked list only to have trouble again. If they go on the block list they stay on it to save us both the stress.

T Hee Bay as I call it is laughable really, but when you have sold a good machine with probably a minor fault as Mark had only to have problems after it is time to have a think if its all worth it. To some ebay is a life of wheeler dealing it seems but we still have a world out there to see or touch and we have enjoyed a quieter distancing from T Hee Bay.

It did however come in handy meeting collectors we had never seen before to deliver or collect in person, have a nice chat and even watch a film or three. The auction house is what it is and will always be getting worse would be my guess as well.
Upside? We do have a choice. Don't bother or expect the unexpected.

I will be welcoming the UK film fairs back in 2021 where we can all be civilised and share the interest in person.

Thank you all, so not just me. Yes its too much of a minefield to sell on Ebay, no seller protection. For all O know this buyer FUBARed my projector and is deceptively returning it. I have recent video proof of it working too, on youtube, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HHe...ature=youtu.be.

A few years ago I sold a mini dv tape player, chap bought it, few weeks later he wants a refund as it 'doesn't work'. I refund, receive the FULLY WORKING PROPERLY player back, now I check the hidden hour meter in one of the sub menus, and would you believe , its gone up by some 50 hours!! The buyer used my player to transfer his footage tapes and then sent back, FREE HIRE it appears. The problem with the eBay snowflake buyer is, they think everything is brand new, with a warranty and sold by a company. Im just really appalled at this buyer as he is probably on this forum perhaps, trust he reads this and explains what is wrong with the projector as he never offered a word of explanation. Stay safe all.

Had that as well with one of my work hd camcorders accepted a return giving full refund without question this end. Silly buyer filmed a wedding with it and left the footage on the sd card upon return with a note saying the camera never worked. Funny that as the footage some 3 hours long seemed to show it working!
            What do you do....

I have known of buyers that send back a "defective" item and in reality they kept the good one and sent back their broken one instead...in fact upgrading theirs at no cost. Pitiful that people actually do that.

There are buyers i block, including a couple from forums, this one included as they seem to like the idea of asking for "partial refunds" but when you say "no, please return it for a full refund excluding postage", (with a case raised via ebay so they can monitor what your doing), then they get miffed. In other words, they want to keep the item and have some cash back, so perhaps they should be careful in the first place how much they bid.
Thats why when selling films list the sub titles in the description as, The print, The Colour and the sound. If they cant still cant work it out, then there in the wrong hobby. Any equipment l listed was always marked as "no warranty given or implied".

And many seem to forget how old these mechanical antiques are!
We are getting on a few years now since the uk laboratory knocked out iffy S8 prints at the end and these are still selling for ludicrous speed prices being faulty from new. Remember the negative tape joins anyone flashing up on your new super 8 print?

Support your country's film fairs it's a better place to hang out in 2021
Hope your projector comes back ok Mark

As a lot of people have stated, there are a lot of people who will buy an item, (like the mini DV), only to use for one use and then demand a return based upon the item not working. There are, probably, nearly as many sellers that are dishonest. Mark, didn't eBay take into account the already paid refund you have the buyer?

I’m afraid some of this happens outside of eBay too. I recently bought a low fade Derann trailer. When I first reached out, I was too slow as it was already sold. Said seller told me it was returned and he would forward it to me. Great! We’ve all used and trust this seller, who has received much praise on this forum. Trailer arrived and it was totally red! Looks like someone pulled the switch on him! He made it right, but I felt bad that someone did this to a person who is so nice and helps keep our hobby alive. Why should he have to take that loss? It’s really disappointing to hear people treat each other that way.

Ive been burnt a few times on ebay by a few certain sellers and also at the conventions - by supposed reputable individuals - I make a point as a collector that if I decide to sell a print on ebay - I will post pictures and an accurate description - then surely there should be no issues.

                            I agree, David.

Honesty is the key. The truth may hurt a little, if one is selling a bit of a scratchy or faded print, but with a true description and screenshots, I have found they do still sell, at the proper price, and have received no future recourse.

                              What about equipment?

i've seen listings with really low prices on the actual goods but then the shipping is multiplied three or four times so you still end up paying a couple hundred dollars for something that needs $600 worth of repair......
