  • PIECES OF SILVER/PRECIOUS IMAGES The Sound

    Happy new year!!!!
I was lucky to get the Chuck Workman short „Pieces of Silver“ lately and it is like new and awesome and I already own the academy award winner „Precious Images“.
But the sound of both shorts is in mono. And so I would like to ask here if someone knows, if there are stereo versions around? On DVD or VHS? I don’t find anything in the net.
Is it possible for anyone to help me getting the stereo sound for re-recording?
    Thank You for any help.
All the best and stay safe
    Oliver

Oliver, I took my sound from it on YouTube(pieces of silver? The precious images, I couldn't find at the time and as both were low sound I took it from track one onto track two and then transferred the sound back after adjusting the levels and sounds much better, not stereo on PI but a lot louder and clearer,Mark

          Hey Shorty!,

Precious Images is a Chuck Workman short composed of something like 500 clips from iconic movies. It was sold on Super-8 by Derann as "Reflections USA".

Precious Moments is a set of somewhat disturbing figurines that my wife collects!

You walk into a room with about 50 of these staring out of a cabinet at you, you feel uneasy turning your back on them!

(Glad I could clear that up!)

Last year i purchased a second copy of Reflections, (the UK version of precious images) and this second copy had been re-recorded somewhere along the line in stereo, the sound is excellent. Although it should be said that the original sound is also very good. Like many collectors we have both reflections UK & USA and pieces of silver. Three musts for any collector.

Typical of the films I write reviews for, it’s one I really like, but It‘s also one I found on the Franchetti Tables at Cinesea, so it’s not rare! Maybe one will come up for you too.

Is there a chance to get the stereo sound as a wav- or mp3-copy?

The link provided by Mike Newell (https://vimeo.com/181804469) is far better quality than what you will find on youtube. I did find an even better copy at https://vimeo.com/user13064393. The later was posted by "Calliope Films" (listed in the ending credits of the film as one of the Production Facilities).

Oddly enough, the website for Directors Guild of America (https://www.dga.org) does not have Precious Images available for streaming. It does however have interesting interviews with Chuck Workman (see below).

                      Visual History with Chuck Workman
"Chuck Workman discusses his career as a director of the Academy Award-winning short film Precious Images (1986)"
                      Link: https://www.dga.org/Craft/VisualHist...k-Workman.aspx

DGA does host "Director's Cut" for streaming:

                      Director's Cut- 75th Anniversary Compilation

DIRECTOR’S CUT - A Film by Chuck Workman

Director's Cut commemorates 75 years of directing history through the compilation of hundreds of clips illustrating the entire range of our members' work. The focus is on images of directors working—not just the work itself—underscoring to audiences that these lasting images are the result of a director's vision. Workman's commemorative short film for the DGA's 50th Anniversary, Precious Images, won an Academy Award in 1987.

Look for the interview of John Ford by Peter Bogdonovich. Peter asks John Ford how he shot a scene. Ford replies, "With a camera".
