I restored my father-in-law's 8mm projector to full working order and have been going through old ciné films. Now when I switched it on the film will not move. Using the manual operating knob all belts and cogs move as they should. I assume the motor has failed although it still makes the right noises when switched on and the light comes on. Has anyone got any ideas? I would be very grateful

If you can turn over the mechanism by hand and the motor makes "the right noises", are you sure that the drive belt is OK, if not broken, it may have become stretched.

Maurice the drive belt is fine. I replaced it when I restored the projector a couple of years ago. It seemed as if the motor was running slower and slower and then stopped completely but still sounds as if it is running. Take off the drive belt and switch on. Does the motor go now?
If not, move the speed control backwards and forwards.
If the motor still does not go, then there are problems there, either a faulty commutator, or worn down brushes. Both a job for a specialist repair.

sometime when a new belt is placed it is replaced with a slightly thicker one. then you will be getting in all sorts of troubles with the still image mechanism as this touches the belt and causes friction. sometime people managed to get a bit shorter belt in there resulting in too slow running and having the speed slider all the way up. this also causes motor bearrings to be destroid. a P8 needs the exact right belt for it. also the speed slider could be a bit corroded, slide it several times up and down fast so it will scratch clean(altough this is something i have never seen in an Eumig but many times in Noris). disassembly of an eumig p8 motor is a hell of a job, so i do hope the problem lies elsewhere.Comment

Anyway to cut a long story short I put the belt on and the projector is working! Although it is juddering very slightly as the film goes through which gives it a bit of a flicker. Erik's comment is useful. It's possible the belt you bought is not really the correct one. Perhaps another new one from a different source.

The film at the two sprockets runs continuously, but the film at the gate starts and stops sixteen times per second. The purpose of the two loops is to absorb the gate's intermittent movement.
