  • New large film reels in production

On request of several members of this forum, I have started with the production of new large super8 reels.

The first one is for films of 360 meters (1200 ft). Other sizes are planned for production.
If you require a specific size, please let me know! Then I will adjust my production planning.
(doing this, I will continue the work of Julio Castella from Barcelona who made these in the past)

Nylon core with Aluminum plates - sounds like an excellent design. What's the purpose of that rib coming across from the inner rim to one of the radial rib structures? Film attachment perhaps?

This looks like a copy of the Beaulieu 1200ft reels. The spur indeed locks in the film end. I do love them and purchased a couple of the last new stock that Wittner had. Very nice.

On the Van-Eck website the reel is priced at 68 Euro. A quick search on Google = $83.00 USD!!!!!!!!!!!

The rib coming across from the inner rim to one of the radial rib structures is for connecting the end of the film. The rib is flexible. You can push it and then insert the end of the film. The ensures the film is hold in place.

Edwin really has to be applauded for producing new components and accessories. Remember it's probably coming up to 30 years since the last Super 8 projectors were produced and the fact that you can still buy new components and specialist reels is nothing short of amazing.

Edwin's components are not being mass produced - they are small production runs and so you simply don't get the economies of scale when you are not producing thousands upon thousands of a particular product. I've visited Edwin's shop and it's a very professional outfit - this is not some guy in a garage turning these out on his days off. Thank you Edwin for keeping our hobby alive!

                  Edwin,

Thank you. The reels look fantastic!

Would you consider making a replacement part for the GS-1200 middle tension piece? Once these get worn they start scratching the film. I've seen versions that have substituted a roller to reduce wear.

That's a great idea! I know some have put a roller there. A nice kit we could just swap in would be ideal.

would 1600ft. reels also possible with this design? What would be the price for such a reel? Do You also have metal cans for these reels?
                      Thank You

A little rubber or even plastic relieved roller would be good.

Could do with a budget version for the 600 feet Elmo`s too.

                        Best Mark.

Today I have added a 300m / 1000 ft. reel to our assortment. It fits on all projectors which can handle 240m reels (800ft). Due to its smaller core.
E.g. for The Bauer T500/T600 series.

I have changed the design of the inner core of the new reels - smaller and a bit less complicated. This lowers the selling prices and more film can be put on the reels :-)

                          See:
                          https://shop.van-eck.net/film-supplies/8mm-reels/p-1a/

I will check with our repair guy for the need for the Elmo GS1200 tension part.

Next on my list is a bigger reel for the Beaulieu 708EL projectors!

Applauds Edwin on innovation! Thru this shocking 18 months we have seen some miraculous items become available for 8mm followers and a great thing to see happen. Well done all of you who have put in the investment so we can keep ourselves entertained on the home screen.

I can lay claim to one minor innovation having set myself up a workshop.
Here is how to make a 16mm to 35mm rewind adapter.

                            One 50 Pence broom handle
Center drill the hole to fit rewinders opening up gradually
Cut a nail and drill a small hole to locate glue in place.
                            Total outlay £1.50 UK

                            Off topic sorry

Edwin, the 360 m spools don't appear anymore on your site but I can see this : https://shop.van-eck.net/film-suppli...a/SF-0403.html It says 480 m but has a 360 m spool measures. Is it a typo or is it a 480 m spool that fits 360 m projectors capacities thanks to a smaller core like your new 300 m spools fits 240 m projectors capacities ?
