During film playback the take up reel rotates in a sluggish / jerky way which will eventually come to a stand still. I have to manually rotate it every few seconds to get it moving again. When the film playback has ended and all film is on the take up reel, it rotates smoothly. Is there a belt in this machine that needs replacing?

Hello Robert and welcome to the 8mm forum family of friends.
I'm working on a Eumig at the moment so a few tips for you to check out may be of help and pictures.
PROVIDING THE WHOLE PROJECTOR IS NOT RUNNING SLOW THIS WILL HELP YOU.
1: The take up reel arm has a white cover this will pop off towards you and you can check for any cracked or broken parts on the gears within.
BEWARE! Inside are small gears and a washer so open slowly otherwise you will find them on the floor.
Worth cleaning these when out, re greasing/lubricating before re assembling.
2:If all's good with that open the back cover, look to the top right and you will see a clutch adjustment for the take up reel arm. Hold the gear on the other side and you can twist the rear adjustment 1/4 turn to apply more tension.

Eumig thankfully had a very simple design so remedies are not over complicated.

Sound like the 2 round main drive wheels need attention due to age.
Solution.
You need to dress or apply a belt dressing onto the black rotary drive wheels.
Belt dressing comes in a aerosol which you spray on a lintbfree cloth and rub/coat onto the 2 black drive wheels in the back.of the Eumig. Leave it 24hrs then run the projector. Should be good then.
Belt Dressing Aerosol.
