  • Bell and Howell 256 reels

Hi - I don't know much about cine projectors, as will probably become apparent, and have just signed up to ask a question.

I inherited a Bell and Howell 256 from my late father, which doesn't actually work properly, but my question is about which tapes I can play on it. I have quite a few where the holes do not fit on the spindles (?) - either too big or too small. Can I change the spindles on the projector or does it mean that I would need different types of projector to play different tapes?

Thanks for any advice, and apologies if I've asked in the wrong place!

There are two types of 8mm film, each having different perforations.
From 1932 there is standard 8. From 1965 there is Super 8.

The 256 will only run standard 8 film. To run Super 8 you need a Super 8 projector.

Have a look at my attachment. You can then see the difference between the two film types.

Thank you Maurice, that's very helpful. Do you know if there are services which would digitise both types, and would anyone here recommend anyone?

Here is a company in the UK who advertise transfers of standard 8 and Super 8 films.
But, I have no personal knowledge of their services.
