For "sticky-muck" removal I use "Sticky Stuff Remover" made by De-Solv-It whose parent company are based in Atlanta. No doubt you could get it in the USA. UK Amazon sell it, no doubt so does USA Amazon.
Some sprayed on a clean cloth and wrapped around films on a rewinder is very effective, and quite cheap, and lasts a long time.

Shane, that was quite interesting. Those large machines would be quite impractible. I wonder what the chemical compounds would be for the "solvent"?

That's a good question! I'm not sure what they use for the ultrasonic cleaning solvent. You could try emailing them with that question. I've had film developed at their processing lab, and they are very friendly.

I've seen videos of the Dr Who restoration team putting 16mm through a machine like that.

One thing I do know is that they won't be using what was used in Post Office engineering parts cleaning unltrasound devices - Genclene, a rather nasty CFC!!
