  • Columbia 7th Voyage of Sinbad - silent without subtitles?

I screened a few Super 8 silents that I picked up recently, including parts 1 & 3 of Columbia's The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. I'm very familiar with this cutdown, so I was surprised to see that neither of these silent versions had any subtitles. The copyright year on these is 1973 as opposed to the earlier subtitled prints I have. Did Columbia make a mistake? I know of one other collector who has also run across this. Has anyone else found similar prints?

I have prints like these. They were likely intended for sound editions but were never striped and put out as silent editions.

      Mike,

Thanks. I am surprised that Columbia went ahead and sold these anyway. Later on they let the low end distributor Atlas Films sell these non-subtitled prints under different titles, such as "Sorcerer's Hideaway" and "Cave Guardian".

My very first "package" movie (Christmas present aged 7!) was a B&W silent 200ft of Earth vs The Flying Saucers from Columbia.

Although sold here in the UK by Portland mail order, it was in an original Columbia art work box. It had a B&W silent sticker on the front and although it contained a couple of quite lengthy dialogue scenes, it had no subtitles. As I didn't know any differently, I was more than happy, but being an inquisitive kid, I did peel off that sticker and lo and behold, below it the original box had "B&W sound" printed on it.

Given the original box, I'm guessing it was an original Columbia print as opposed to a UK copy.

So I'd say it was a version that was originally sound, but released also without stripe as a silent version and without subtitles.

Still, it had lots of flying saucers, so 7 year old me was happy...
