      Saturday Night Show!

      OK, so it’s Saturday sun-set(-ish).
We’ve had dinner and we’re ready to see some films. Let’s check out the room and see what the state of preparations are.

For projection we are rigged for 35mm, 16mm and Super-8.

Yes, indeed that IS a video projector there, but it is there with a purpose: most of the time for supporting material like the CineSea fanfare, and more rarely it has shown really great films about film like Peter Flynn’s Viva Film! at CineSea 25. Of course, we’d love if it arrived on reels, but that’s a lot to expect these days.

For sound we have multiple speakers up by the screen. The big ones are for 35, 16 and video and the smaller ones are for Super-8.

The Show MUST go on! (-and it did!)

(Selected Scenes: there are always too many to remember, apologies if I missed yours! I'm missing most of my own!)

There was a nice reel of 35mm daysets.

We joined in the worldwide remembrance of Maurice Leakey by showing Laurel and Hardy in Perfect Day: his favorite L&H.

I managed to sneak in some kind of railroad movie in the form of Walt Disney’s The Brave Engineer.
(This was the first time I've gotten TWO 16mm films on screen.)

There was a reel of 1980s Era New York area TV ads. Including the long defunct audio retailer Crazy Eddie!
Back when my car stereos cost more than the cars I installed them in: “Eddie” was where I bought them!

This is the new Reel Image Casino Royale extract release. It has the opening scene, title song and Parkour chase.
Steve Osbourne was kind enough to lend us a print for Saturday Night show.

This is from The Best of Horror, Part II (Universal Eight). This one began life as a silent reel and stayed that way until it met Doug. He developed a correct soundtrack, striped it and dubbed sound. We usually have one of these Saturday Night and they are a lot of fun! They show how digest editors were challenged to get the original story across even though major amounts of footage had been removed. They had to get creative by introducing narration and in the case of silents like this, making the characters seem to say lines the actors never learned. The dialogue on the soundtrack matches the subtitles most of the time, yet not always!

A nice 16mm Travelogue for Wildwood, New Jersey! We’ve had a number of these over the years: Happy families journeying to a sunny week on the beach in an era of immense station wagons with white walls, chrome and tailfins, women with huge hairdos and Rock and Roll musicians performing in suits and ties! Wildwood at its core still celebrates this era with Doo-Wop weekends and old car shows, and quite often they are in town when CineSea is too.

-but just as always, the hour got late, and we few that remained until the end went our weary way back to our rooms. Of course, there were some reels that didn’t get their chance that night, and that’s actually a good thing: there are still more for next time!

      Next: Sunday and Home

The thing about Saturday Night is the amazing variety of films.

In 1965 there was a series of cartoons made to promote physical fitness. The audience exercised along with a 16mm print of The Mighty Mr. Titan.

According to the principles of dramatic structure, it's being saved for the big finish. Aristotle would be proud!

                Sunday and Home

All things must end! -even the good things! -and just maybe that’s for the best. It’s part of what keeps the good things good, by keeping them special. Show me a man who tests pogo-sticks 40 hours a week, and I’ll show you a man who hates pogo-sticks in much less than a month!

We started out having breakfast at the Marvis.

We have a pretty rare opportunity to see CineSea getting stowed away here. The pictures haven't ever gone that way before.

-and of course let's not forget about the hotel rooms too!
-but in the end the cars were loaded up, we said our goodbyes and headed home.

In the spirit of our rainy weekend, we did something we never have tried before: taking the group shot just before Saturday Night Show.

-but of course tradition says this is where it ends up!

CineSea 27 is now at a close, but CineSea itself keeps on going: CineSea 28 is set for April 18 -21, 2024

And then it was over. We took nothing but pictures and left nothing but bits of leader, empty cans of Dust-Off and a large number of pizza boxes.
(With apologies to author Aliyyah Eniath)

                  See you in April!

I often imagine what happens in what we call "the CineSea Room" the rest of the weekends it's being used. Maybe sometime or other there is a baseball card meet or a quilting society, maybe a Poker or Bridge tournament. I know people who belong to a national organization called "N-Trak" where members build and bring 8 foot long modules containing N-scale track and scenery (the local clubs bring the corner modules...). They could do impressive work in that spacious room!

I called the Ocean Holiday once for my reservation. Shelley said "Please call me back in about an hour? The office is full of Firemen and I can't hear you.". I said "Oh my God! Is everybody OK?!!". She said "Oh! It's fine! -this weekend is their convention!" (Then who was back home fighting the fires???)

-so these rooms are many different things to many different people!

Let's hope that whoever else goes there, and whenever else they are there, they have as good a weekend as we do!
