  • Disney super 8 optical sound!

I wonder as to how many super 8 optical sound releases there were, officially? I own two super 8 optical sound color shorts, "Trader Horn" and the Goofy cartoon, "Knight for a Day", but I also know that for the airlines, they released features. Chip used to have the Disney animated feature, "Jungle Book", I know that Disney was still releasing they're non animated features in the 80's, as I remember seeing "Splash", as well as "The Journey of Natty Gann". Anybody have any other info on releases?

The film print I had was actually pretty terrible for quality. The color was faded. It was pink, and the sound output was very very low. The projector had to be turned way up and it even still didn't sound that great. I was happy when I replaced it with the magnetic version in good color

and I made sure to play it through a projector that could handle it well

it is a known fact that some projector companies put a restriction on optical output, so that yes, you did have to turn it up stronger than magnetic and they did this in case the optical track was over modulated whatever that means

that fact is confirmed if you find yourself wondering how come magnetic sounds better than optical. Among other reasons the output restriction would be one of them

I had no idea of that. Thanks for that information.

        From google

Many radio stations design their signals to ride near full modulation a great deal of the time by means of compression (see diagrams under COMPRESSION). Over-modulation occurs when this maximum level is exceeded, and the result is DISTORTION, or even equipment damage.

I heard at a BFCC that some Disney shorts were made with optical sound for coin in the slot booths for children to watch. I believe "Knight for a Day" was one and it was shown there.

The funny thing is that I have never ran into a magnetic sound copy of "Trader Horn" only this optical sound. I did not know the origination of these opticals and how they were used

When I first bought my ElmoST100HD, I hired the 200ft WDHM "The Prince & the Dragon" from Sleeping Beauty with optical sound. It was identical to the magnetic version, so I assume it was an official release.

No idea why they would do this though. The sound was good.
