  • Question for the older film makers - Film strobing and pulsing when projected

I'm sure over the last 40 years I must have come across this, if I have then I've forgotten...excuse old age!

A batch of home shot Std 8 circa late 50's early 60's has mild strobing and feint flashing.
This is apparent when projected NOTHING to do with Telecine, I reiterate when projected. Known good reels are...good, ruling out the projector.
Seems likely that this must be a camera fault. Were some cameras Clockwork? Could it be that a shutter was on/faulty?
Needless to say the inherent mild strobing and feint flashing is apparent on the Telecine. However Neat Video's anti strobe feature "stabilised" the pictures.
Not losing sleep but any thoughts?

I agree with your suspicion that it must be a problem with the shutter. In searching around I found that this can also be a problem with digital cameras, not just film.

My wildest guess is the worn out camera mechanic / gear train, causing the shutter blade to "wobble" around when shooting. That wobbling would cause uneven exposure to each film frame, hence that strobing.
