JERRY AND THE LION - Tom & Jerry cartoon - 1950 - LPP colour - Red Fox distribution
Sound = Excellent
Colour = Excellent
Box = Original
Tom is in the living room listening to music and almost drifts off but his reverie is disturbed by loud noises from the kitchen. He goes to see that Jerry has rigged up various platforms from the refrigerator to a mouse hole and is quickly sending food to the hole. Tom chases Jerry and blocks a doorway hoping to catch him, but there is a little door at ground level and Jerry disappears into it.
Tom returns to his comfy chair and his radio. Suddenly there comes a news bulletin saying that a lion has escaped from the circus and home owners should lock all windows and doors. In fast motion Tom rushes around the house to do just that. His last action is to appear in a pith helmet and with a shotgun. Jerry retreats to the basement. The lion is there in hiding, he explains he hated the circus and asks if Jerry can help him get back to the jungle. But first he needs food.
There follows various scenes where Tom tries to get the food from Jerry but he does not know that the lion is there and therefore gets severely thumped each time to his surprise thinking he was being attacked by Jerry. Eventually the gun goes off accidentally into the air. Jerry feigns injury, Tom rushes off and comes back with a First Aid box but Jerry has gone. He's at the docks helping the lion to get in the SS Africa's lifeboat. As the ship sails away a tearful Jerry waves goodbye as Auld Lang Syne swells up and into an iris out.
I laughed all the way through this delightful cartoon and in this case the lovely LPP colour really enhanced the enjoyment. Thoroughly recommended.
