Moviestuff UNSUPPORTED units forum

I'm considering setting up a Users Group for old Moviestuff transfer units that are NO LONGER SUPPORTED by Moviestuff.

This would be a "forum-type" group that would focus on DISCONTINUED film scanner units manufactured by Moviestuff in Texas. This group would not supported by Moviestuff but would look to include users of the previous generations of Moviestuff equipment such as CineMate, WorkPrinter, Sniper, SlideStream, SoundStream, Velocity Box, QuickSilver, Mi-Skan and EZ-Scan movie film scanners.

Group Members would bee encouraged to ask or answer questions about reviving or keeping these older units working.

Here are a few of the types of questions that may be of interest:
1. What PC/Mac platforms/specs are you using?
2. Will the CineCap software run on Windows 10? 64-bit systems? If so, what mods are needed?
3. How to obtain old versions of unsupported CineCap software?
4. Are there other types of software packages (e.g. Scenalyzer) on which Moviestuff products will work? If so, what products and tips on setting up?
5. Tips and ideas on converting SD machines to HD.
6. Specific technical issues you may be having that forum members may help with.
7. What are the different versions of CineCap Velocity software (e.g. 3-March-2011 versions versus 3-April-2012 versions).

Although Roger has been GREAT in answering questions for older units, he has his hands full with the current, supported machines. I know that there are a LOT of unsupported machines out there and owners have done amazing things with them and have untapped knowledge and tweaks, etc.

Hopefully there will be interest in this type of forum.

If anybody still intended to capture in SD resolution (huh?) using miniDV camera with firewire output, but have no access to Cinecap software. That Scenalyzer capture (http://www.scenalyzer.com/) should be the best possible substitute. Tried this software with my previous DIY setup. It worked flawlessly.

The key of success would be its process method. Instead of capturing from the incoming DV stream & converting them into of still image sequence like most another stop-motion capture software (additional process hence additional workload) this software instead cherry-pick native DV frames from incoming stream according the trigger command, then "stitch" them back into normal DV file when finished. No recompression required, so it's fast & very efficient.

I've seen a number of references to Scenalyzer as an alternative tool. Does this software have the option to recognize "mouse clicks" for each frame of film, or does it use some other method for capturing frames? It's obviously not supported anymore, but I'll give it a closer look if it can be configured to work with the Workprinter or Sniper systems.

Scenalizer works with the Workprinter sync mouse very well however it will only capture in SD not HD. I used this software early on before I got into capturing in HD. It was a great program ... much better than Cinecap... Too bad they didn't continue development.

Not sure if there is any interest but I just came up with the capture software that takes the usb video stream (web cam) and converts it into an MP4 video by grabbing the frames triggered by a mouse click.
I struggled for a along time developing the capture software based on DirectX and and DirectShow and consistently ran into performance issue. Thee capture would crash at 5FPS or higher.
So gave up on that and switched to OpenCV for Windows and got the capture working at 7 FPS. I use this with my modified Sankyo 1000 and ELP camera that fits inside the lens holder of the projector.
The mouse trigger is generated with a simple opto coupler cct and small Arduino.

Not sure if this software would work with the Intensity Pro card but it may be worth trying it if you happen to have a Workprinter and no software for it. If it does not work with the Intensity Pro, it may work with the cheat USB capture card.

Tom Fales Janice Glesser and Nantawat Kittiwarakul I am not really into digital film scanning thing but triggered by this post, I just knew that Moviestuff has some discontinued machines. Now with that old scanners (which is said only serve SD quality) what would be the result if we compare with those today's cheap scanner from WINAIT family (Wolverine and such)?
